Kathy Hochul for doing right by New Yorkers, even though it annoys a powerful union.<\/p>\n<p>By temporarily suspending licensing requirements for nurses from other states to work here, the gov has quite rightly made it easier for hospitals <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/13\/us-news\/nyc-nurses-strike-enters-second-day-as-hospitals-move-to-fill-labor-gaps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to keep functioning<\/a> amid the ongoing nurses strike \u2014 and so allowed them to keep providing life-saving care.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no permanent solution: Fill-in nurses aren\u2019t cheap, and hospitals have to (for example) put off more-lucrative optional surgeries to prioritize the crucial ones.<\/p>\n<p>The strike, that is, still slams their bottom lines \u2014 just not as much as giving in to the union\u2019s demands for a 33% pay hike over three years.<\/p>\n<p>But the public is (largely) protected: The gov is doing her duty, even if it costs her votes and special-interest love.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a stark contrast to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/12\/opinion\/mayor-mamdani-just-joined-the-nurses-picket-line-against-himself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheering on the strikers<\/a> even though their demands would <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/25\/opinion\/nyc-nurses-strike-could-slam-health-care-system-in-zohran-mamdanis-first-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost the city big-time<\/a>, since its public hospitals have already agreed to whatever pay hikes the private ones wind up conceding.<\/p>\n<p>On top of ongoing cuts in federal support to New York\u2019s public health-care spending, that could eat up cash the mayor needs for the rest of his agenda \u2014 but we guess he figures more tax hikes will solve all his problems.<\/p>\n<p>For all our gripes with Hochul, New York is lucky to have at least one top executive who retains a firm grip on reality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Kudos to Gov.
