It\u2019s a hard lesson that the rebranded de-branded(?) HBO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/max\/\" id=\"auto-tag_max_1\" data-tag=\"max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max<\/a> is learning this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs of Wednesday, HBO Max is no longer Max and <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/digital\/hbo-max-name-return-date-rebrand-warner-bros-discovery-1236309674\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/digital\/hbo-max-name-return-date-rebrand-warner-bros-discovery-1236309674\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is back to being HBO Max<\/a>, just on the Max platform. We know, it\u2019s confusing. Either way, it appears that X (fka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/twitter\/\" id=\"auto-tag_twitter_1\" data-tag=\"twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>) is not playing ball with all of this back and forth \u2014 or at any rate, it has not played ball yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201ctwitter won\u2019t let me change my name back,\u201d the pinned @StreamOnMax tweet reads. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWell, maybe if you called the platform by its own new name, X, it would be more agreeable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs for @hbomax, its profile reads: \u201ctwitter won\u2019t let us switch our handles \u00af\\_(\u30c4)_\/\u00af\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">twitter won&#8217;t let me change my name back<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Actually HBO Max (@StreamOnMax) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StreamOnMax\/status\/1942934951311118834?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">July 9, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s glaring for a few reasons: 1) We knew the streaming video platform\u2019s name reversion was coming for months now. 2) We knew it was coming today since yesterday. And 3) The other social media platforms have been quick to allow the swap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs of this story posting, X is the only major platform to still have the Max handle as the primary profile for the core Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service; Facebook, TikTok and Instagram have all obliged the change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s certainly probable that there is just some delay here \u2014 we can\u2019t speak for X. The Hollywood Reporter reached out to X\u2019s head of communications, but we did not immediately receive a response. THR also did not immediately hear back from our request for (further) comment from HBO Max.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tX has a very TV-friendly CEO \u2014 Linda Yaccarino was formerly chairwoman of global advertising &amp; partnerships at NBCUniversal. We\u2019ll see if she steps in to expedite the now-public request.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTHR\u00a0reported on Tuesday that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/warner-bros-discovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Warner Bros. Discovery<\/a>\u00a0would officially rebrand its Max streaming service to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/hbo-max\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HBO Max<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday, per a source familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe name change back to HBO Max, the name it used from 2020 until 2023, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/digital\/max-name-change-hbo-max-upfronts-1236216616\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first announced onstage at WBD\u2019s upfront presentation<\/a>\u00a0back in May. \u201cI know you\u2019re all shocked, but the good news is I have a drawer full of stationery from the last time around,\u201d HBO chief Casey Bloys quipped at the upfront.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe pivot comes after WBD decided to change its streaming strategy and lean into the premium nature of HBO\u2019s offering, pulling back in some areas like unscripted and kids and family programming, rather than compete on scale with the likes of Netflix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThis evolution has been influenced by changing consumer needs, and the fact that no consumer today is saying they want more content, but most consumers are saying they want better content,\u201d the company said in a statement connected to the (latest) name change. \u201cWith other services filling the more basic needs with volume, WBD has clearly distinguished itself through its quality and distinct stories, and no brand has done that better and more consistently over 50-plus years than HBO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWBD is set to undergo larger changes, with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/warner-bros-discovery-split-two-streaming-studios-networks-1236259800\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company to be split in two next year<\/a>. HBO Max will be part of a new company led by David Zaslav alongside the Warner Bros. film and TV studios, with the linear TV networks spun into a new company to be led by Gunnar Weidenfels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe company is also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/hbo-max-international-countries-launches-july-90-markets-1236231624\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking HBO Max globally<\/a>, launching the brand in 12 new markets this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAlex Weprin contributed to this story.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sometimes, X is not Gon\u2019 Give It To Ya.
