{"id":518300,"date":"2026-01-15T16:22:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T16:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/518300\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T16:22:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T16:22:18","slug":"empire-center-warns-of-sharp-increase-in-new-york-electricity-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/518300\/","title":{"rendered":"Empire Center Warns of Sharp Increase in New York Electricity Prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York households pay some of the highest electricity prices in the nation, raising affordability concerns, according to the Empire Center\u2019s and the U.S. Energy Information Administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.empirecenter.org\/energydata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October 2025, the average residential electricity price in New York hit\u00a0<b>26.95 cents per kilowatt-hour<\/b>\u2014about\u00a0<b>50 percent higher than the U.S. average<\/b>\u00a0and among the top ten highest rates nationwide. Moreover, prices rose\u00a0<b>7.6 percent compared to a year ago<\/b>,\u00a0faster than the U.S. average.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unlike natural gas prices, which align more closely with national averages, electricity prices in New York have surged disproportionately, putting residents at a growing disadvantage. Since 2019\u20132020, the gap between New York and the rest of the country has widened, reversing decades of slow convergence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAffordability must become the guiding principle for New York\u2019s energy policy,\u201d said\u00a0<b>Zilvinas\u00a0Silenas<\/b>,\u00a0president\u00a0and CEO of the Empire Center. \u201cIf most of the country enjoys cheaper electricity, New York must not be doing something right.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Empire Center will continue publishing monthly updates through its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.empirecenter.org\/energydata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Energy Data Bulletin<\/b><\/a>, tracking electricity and natural gas prices across New York and neighboring states.
