{"id":519579,"date":"2026-01-16T05:00:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T05:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/519579\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T05:00:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T05:00:23","slug":"phoenix-cracks-down-on-jaywalking-with-new-citation-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/519579\/","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix cracks down on jaywalking with new citation policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><b>PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014Starting Friday, a new update to a city of Phoenix ordinance will allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/12\/24\/no-more-warnings-phoenix-changes-jaywalking-policy-pedestrian-deaths-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/12\/24\/no-more-warnings-phoenix-changes-jaywalking-policy-pedestrian-deaths-rise\/\">officers to issue citations for people illegally crossing<\/a> or stopping on the street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/phoenix.municipal.codes\/CC\/36-128\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/phoenix.municipal.codes\/CC\/36-128\">City Ordinance 36-128<\/a> will allow officers to issue a ticket on first contact when they notice someone breaking this law. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Phoenix police say the change addresses safety concerns involving roads and medians, as they hope to reduce the number of injuries and crashes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officers will still retain full discretion and may continue to provide warnings, education or other appropriate enforcement based on the circumstances of each encounter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The tougher enforcement comes as the city plans to spend $5.6 million to build 10 new pedestrian-activated crosswalks in high-traffic areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Phoenix is ranked fourth worst in the country for pedestrian fatalities, and a new report shows the problem is only getting worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">See a spelling or grammatical error in our story? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/page\/send-us-your-feedback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Please click here to report it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Do you have a photo or video of a breaking news story?
