WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump<\/a> and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer<\/a> (D-NY) huddled Thursday for a private\u00a0discussion focused on infrastructure funding for New York\u2019s Gateway tunnel project.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0rare afternoon meeting\u00a0between the\u00a0oftentimes at-odds leaders \u2014 who have spent much of the last year railing against each other \u2014 also touched on healthcare and immigration policy.<\/p>\n

The sitdown between Trump and the most powerful congressional Democrat, whom the president has\u00a0nicknamed\u00a0\u201cCryin\u2019 Chuck\u201d and \u201cour great Palestinian senator,\u201d\u00a0wasn\u2019t publicly known until after it had ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump requested a meeting with Leader Schumer at the White House to discuss the president\u2019s hold on the Gateway tunnel project between New York and New Jersey,\u201d the senator\u2019s office said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Trump froze about $18 billion in funding for the Gateway tunnel and the Second Avenue subway project\u00a0in October on the first day of the Schumer-led partial government shutdown, during which Democrats for 43 days held up funding in a bid to extend Obamacare subsidies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the meeting, Leader Schumer emphasized the urgent need to promptly release the already-secured funds for the Gateway Program \u2014 the most important infrastructure project in the nation employing thousands of workers and vital to New York and the entire Northeast economy,\u201d his office said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeader Schumer also raised the need for President Trump to push Senate Republicans to support the 3-year extension of the [Affordable Care Act] tax credit bill that has already passed the House.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was not immediately clear if Trump committed\u00a0to restore the paused infrastructure funds, or if Schumer offered any concessions in return. A variety of\u00a0social-services funds for New York<\/a>\u00a0and four other states also were paused this month with the administration citing fraud concerns.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s no indication yet that Trump agreed to extend\u00a0pandemic-era health insurance subsidies that expired Dec. 31 for about 20 million middle-class policy holders \u2014 despite the Republican-led House<\/a> last week passing a three-year extension.<\/p>\n

Trump on Thursday announced a new legislative plan for healthcare, featuring federal subsidies that would flow into Health Savings Accounts, rather than go toward health insurance premiums.<\/p>\n

Schumer also \u201ctold the president ICE raids<\/a> are terrorizing communities [and] told President Trump that their actions are dangerous and putting more people at risk and he must pull back ICE from U.S. cities,\u201d his office said.<\/p>\n
