STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday that honors the life and legacy of the slain civil rights leader, is Monday, Jan. 19, 2026.<\/p>\n
King was known for his work to end racial segregation and his promotion of equality without violence.<\/p>\n
Each year the holiday honors King, who was killed April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.<\/p>\n
Though it became a federal holiday in 1986, MLK Day wasn\u2019t adopted by all 50 states until 2000. It always takes place on the third Monday in January.<\/p>\n
King\u2019s contributions to the movement and to democracy helped bring about the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n
