(Photo courtesy of the city of San Diego Digital Archives)<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 16, 1915, as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Panama%E2%80%93California_Exposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Balboa Park\u2019s Panama\u2013California Exposition<\/a> was just getting underway, San Diego staged one of its most memorable celebrations of the fair\u2019s first month: a combined Stockholders\u2019 Day and San Francisco Day. The Panama\u2013California Exposition \u2014 a world\u2019s fair marking the opening of the Panama Canal and promoting San Diego as the first United States port of call, as city leaders envisioned it, for ships traveling north through the new waterway \u2014 had opened just over two weeks earlier on Jan. 1, 1915.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/15EXPO-7-scaled.png?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/15EXPO-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-363518\"  \/><\/a> View of the explanada leading to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. About 125 delegates from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/goga\/learn\/historyculture\/ppie.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco\u2019s Panama\u2013Pacific International Exposition<\/a> were also on hand, symbolizing regional cooperation between Northern and Southern California as both cities showcased themselves to the nation. Total attendance that day at the Panama\u2013California Exposition reached 14,793 people, the highest single-day turnout in the fair\u2019s early weeks and one of the most popular celebrations in its first year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/15EXPO-15-scaled.png?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/15EXPO-15.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-363419\"  \/><\/a>View of the exposition area in the park looking west toward the California tower. San Francisco Day, by contrast, highlighted camaraderie between the two great California fairs \u2014 San Diego\u2019s on the southern coast and San Francisco\u2019s larger Panama\u2013Pacific International Exposition, which was also commemorating the <a href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1899-1913\/panama-canal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Panama Canal<\/a> in 1915.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/panama-canal3.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/panama-canal3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-363714\" style=\"width:810px;height:auto\"  \/><\/a>Roosevelt on a digging machine during the construction of the Panama Canal, circa 1908. (Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division)<\/p>\n<p>The Panama\u2013California Exposition continued through Jan. 1, 1917, transforming what is now Balboa Park with elaborate <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Colonial_Revival_architecture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beaux-Arts and Spanish Colonial Revival <\/a>architecture, gardens, exhibits, and cultural events.
