{"id":521234,"date":"2026-01-16T21:16:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T21:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/521234\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T21:16:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T21:16:19","slug":"war-diplomacy-or-revolt-what-comes-next-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/521234\/","title":{"rendered":"War, diplomacy, or revolt: What comes next in Iran?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh0he2r005826p32gtrdvsz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After a week of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/13\/middleeast\/iran-high-tech-additions-playbook-crushing-protests-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">largest nationwide demonstrations<\/a> in years, the streets of Iran have once again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/iran-protests-trump-01-15-26?post-id=cmkfe711o000i3b6rd8cg7vmg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fallen silent<\/a>, subdued by force.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on00033b6pspcj04en@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One resident of Tehran compared the mood in the capital to the days around Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, when many leave the city and shops close early.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on00043b6pzgkzbmgi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there\u2019s no festive cheer, only eerie quiet, they said. Life carries on in the shadow of a deadly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/11\/middleeast\/iran-regime-clings-to-power-protests-hnk-latam-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crackdown on protesters<\/a> and under the specter of a potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/14\/middleeast\/us-iran-new-strike-weapons-analysis-intl-hnk-ml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new military faceoff<\/a> with the United States. The Islamic Republic hopes to celebrate the 47th anniversary of the revolution that brought it to power next month. It will bring out crowds and blast revolutionary tunes. Yet the mood in the halls of power in Tehran is likely to be far less celebratory, as the regime faces the biggest threat to its survival yet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on00053b6p4r5ps28y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may have been able to crush the latest wave of protests using its tried-and-tested playbook of repression. But the fundamental grievances animating protesters haven\u2019t gone away.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on00073b6p9jke8187@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last Thursday and Friday are emerging as some of the most pivotal days in recent Iranian history.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on00083b6p4a4z9fui@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Economic protests that began in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/12\/middleeast\/iran-mass-protests-explained-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tehran\u2019s bazaars<\/a> suddenly transformed into what may turn out to be the greatest threat facing the Islamic Republic since its inception in 1979.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on00093b6pjgsrpvbz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Large crowds took to the streets across the country chanting death to the dictator, calling for the fall of the regime and, in a relatively new development, some calling for the return of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran\u2019s last Shah.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2254948954-20260116151859820.jpg\" alt=\"Iranians gather while blocking a street during a protest in Tehran, Iran on January 9, 2026.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on000a3b6pao00emm9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The scale of the crackdown that followed indicates that the Iranian regime, wounded by last summer\u2019s war with Israel and the US, and bereft of its regional proxies, was in no mood to compromise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on000b3b6pd7r1rk3q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unprecedented digital shutdown, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/12\/politics\/trump-internet-freedom-funding-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut Iranians off<\/a> from the world, means the true scale of the brutality has yet to be fully understood. More than 2,400 people have been killed since the start of Iran\u2019s crackdown on dissent, according to US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Will the US and Iran come to blows?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on000d3b6penao8a0t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the past several weeks, US President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/15\/business\/oil-reserves-trump-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repeatedly threatened to attack Iran<\/a> if the regime used violence against protesters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on000e3b6p6vq7ay7h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Thursday, however, Trump told reporters that \u201cvery important sources on the other side\u201d had informed him the killing had stopped in Iran \u2014 suggesting there would be no immediate US military action. Gulf officials have also told CNN that Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/14\/middleeast\/us-personnel-mideast-base-iran-war-fears-intl-latam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged the US to avoid strikes on Iran<\/a>, warning of security and economic risks that could affect both the US and the wider region. These diplomatic efforts appear to have led to a de-escalation.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/shutterstock-editorial-16316426a-20260116151941416.jpg\" alt=\"Iranians search for their loved ones amid rows of body bags after a crackdown against protesters.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9on000f3b6ppn9i7azh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that could be temporary. Analysts say the threat of American or Israeli strikes on Iran isn\u2019t over yet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000g3b6phpz6po2q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere has been no solution to the actual root of the tensions,\u201d Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, told CNN, adding Israel\u2019s tensions with Iran were never about the protests.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000h3b6p8x914fva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A source told CNN on Thursday that the US military is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/iran-protests-trump-01-15-26?post-id=cmkg3689d00003b6sr71h0qus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moving a carrier strike group to the Middle East<\/a>. It is estimated to arrive in the Persian Gulf towards the end of next week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000i3b6p42hqtr60@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But for now, talk of talks is louder than the drums of war. Speaking in Florida on Thursday, Trump\u2019s envoy Steve Witkoff, who has been in direct contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi over the past week, also struck a conciliatory tone.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000k3b6perilv6mq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even if Tehran and Washington try to revive diplomacy, Iran would be doing so from its weakest position yet. Compared with earlier rounds of talks, the balance of leverage has shifted sharply. Iran\u2019s main nuclear facilities were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/21\/middleeast\/nuclear-sites-iran-us-bombs-wwk-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">badly damaged by US strikes<\/a> last summer, degrading key parts of its program, and most of the proxies it used to project power have been effectively neutralized by Israel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000l3b6pwk58wox9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Iran still retains a sizeable stockpile of highly enriched uranium \u2013 a key component for a nuclear bomb \u2013 the physical and symbolic blow is significant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000m3b6pbe9fizat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Iranians have, in many ways, lost a tremendous amount of leverage,\u201d Parsi said, predicting that \u201cTrump will adopt a very maximalist position\u201d should negotiations restart.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh5blfo001k3b6pfd6dxgva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beyond the nuclear issue, any renewed talks are likely to cover a wider range of issues. The US would be keen to curb Iran\u2019s missile program and its support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/19\/middleeast\/iran-rearm-proxies-us-talks-stall-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proxy groups<\/a> such as Hamas, Hezbollah, as well as Shiite militias across the region. That\u2019s where things can get more complicated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000n3b6pmyst58e7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Iran\u2019s leadership has in the past shown some leeway for a nuclear deal with the US, it has treated the missile program and support for what it calls \u201cresistance\u201d groups as non-negotiable. Any compromise on those fronts would be seen as nothing short of outright capitulation to American demands.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000o3b6pk7oxcapl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it wouldn\u2019t be the first time revolutionary Iran has been forced to accept an imperfect deal. At the end of the Iran\u2013Iraq war in 1988, the Islamic Republic agreed to a ceasefire it had long resisted, with the revolution\u2019s founder Ruhollah Khomeini famously saying it was like \u201cdrinking from a poisoned chalice.\u201d Nearly four decades later, the regime has found itself in a more precarious predicament.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000p3b6phnvw7le5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may be willing to make painful compromises to ensure its survival once again. But even if it does, that may not be enough to regain the legitimacy it has lost with the public after killing so many of its own citizens.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000r3b6phy4vydne@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Experts say the latest protests have shown that the social contract between the Islamic Republic and its people is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/13\/politics\/islamic-republic-iran-protests-different\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">irreparably broken<\/a>. The state has not only failed to protect its citizens from foreign attacks, deliver economic prosperity or allow political and social freedom; it has also repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to use brutal violence to silence them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000s3b6p3ec1jl21@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The social contract was already weak, Parsi said. Now it has \u201cbeen damaged forever.\u201d While the public had some wins after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/21\/middleeast\/iran-mahsa-amini-death-widespread-protests-intl-hnk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 round of protests<\/a> in terms of loosened hijab rules, today\u2019s unrest is very different, Parsi said, attributing it to the unprecedented level of violence employed by the regime.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ap26014594590389.jpg\" alt=\"Women cross a street under a huge propaganda poster in Tehran. (AP Photo\/Vahid Salemi)\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000t3b6phu3qfep3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For many Iranians, nothing short of fundamental change will suffice. That\u2019s an extraordinarily difficult task.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000u3b6p2xjoctg8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over decades in power, Khamenei and his vast security apparatus have systematically crushed any form of internal opposition capable of mounting a serious challenge to his rule.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000v3b6pvsp9a4xj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Figures such as Mostafa Tajzadeh, former deputy interior minister, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/12\/middleeast\/iran-nobel-winner-mohammadi-arrested-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Narges Mohammadi<\/a>, the Nobel Peace Prize- a winning human rights activist, have spent years behind bars for challenging the system from within.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000w3b6ps91e9a3q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If meaningful change were ever to emerge, it is more likely to come from within the same security and power structures that have benefited most from the regime, rather than from the reformist camp that has been steadily hollowed out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000x3b6p0ydejqyy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe most likely scenario is that there is another variation of the regime, through elements from within the same regime,\u201d Parsi said. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing to decapitate the top leadership. The security establishment is a different matter. It cannot just be decapitated easily.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo000z3b6pps11i15o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Outside Iran, the picture gets murkier. Foreign-based opposition groups remain deeply fractured. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/09\/middleeast\/analysis-does-iran-want-shah-son-pahlavi-latam-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reza Pahlavi<\/a>, the exiled son of the last Shah, has re-emerged as a potential rallying figure. He insists he\u2019d be a transitional leader willing to steer Iran to a more prosperous democratic future. But after more than four decades in exile, he has struggled to build a diverse cross-political coalition or devise a plan to bring change that doesn\u2019t include intervention by the US. And he isn\u2019t even Trump\u2019s favorite candidate to rule the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2256598484.jpg\" alt=\"After more than four decades in exile, Reza Pahlavi has struggled to build a diverse cross-political coalition.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo00103b6p9xekdmcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most opposition figures have been out of the country and haven\u2019t really \u201cdone the leg work,\u201d Dina Esfandiary, Middle East lead for Bloomberg Economics based in Geneva, said, adding that someone like Pahlavi \u201cis a very divisive figure and he would split Iranians significantly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo00113b6pdkdm2c0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is this uncertainty that weighs on many Iranians as they consider how far they can push for change. Another potential concern is whether the potential fall of the regime will usher the collapse of Iran as a nation. With its ethnic and regional diversity, and with some groups openly agitating for separation, the risk of fragmentation is a distinct possibility.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh4r9oo00123b6pvl1mfsr2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is likely only a matter of time before another protest wave emerges.
