Why?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It was a Christmas miracle of the fast food variety: A 24-hour Taco Bell had opened in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/university-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University City<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Mexican-ish<b> <\/b>chain opened its 16th Philly location in late December at 3901 Chestnut Street, where it replaced a Boston Market outpost that once <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/philadelphia\/news\/2023\/08\/24\/boston-market-3901-chestnut-unpaid-rent-complaint.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/philadelphia\/news\/2023\/08\/24\/boston-market-3901-chestnut-unpaid-rent-complaint.html\">owed nearly $220,000 in rent<\/a> after defaulting on a lease. To hear some Philadelphians tell it, the opening was practically heaven-sent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The new Taco Bell generated two separate posts from different users last month in the 95,000-member <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/philly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/philly\/\">r\/Philly<\/a> subreddit. Other restaurants yearn for that kind of word-of-mouth marketing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cAnyone have any info on the Taco Bell they\u2019re putting on 39th and Chestnut?\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/philly\/comments\/1pkxwv4\/anyone_have_any_info_on_the_taco_bell_theyre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/philly\/comments\/1pkxwv4\/anyone_have_any_info_on_the_taco_bell_theyre\/\">asked user 8hivefiend8 on Dec. 17<\/a>. \u201cI have high hopes that maybe it will open soon because it looks so close to finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Six days later, user rad_rascal <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/philly\/comments\/1ptwpgs\/new_taco_bell_in_west_philly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/philly\/comments\/1ptwpgs\/new_taco_bell_in_west_philly\/\">posted pictures of the Taco Bell in all of its grand opening glory<\/a> under the title \u201cNew Taco Bell in West Philly!\u201d In the days leading up to the opening, the user wrote, they \u201cwould pass it every day and peer in like a buncha [SIC] creeps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Under both threads, commenters expressed the kind of jubilation normally reserved for, say, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2022\/11\/06\/philadelphia-rotisserie-chicken-walmart-pier-not-a-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2022\/11\/06\/philadelphia-rotisserie-chicken-walmart-pier-not-a-party\/\">rotisserie chicken-eating stunts<\/a> or <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/super-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Super Bowl<\/a> parades. \u201cThis just made my day,\u201d commented one Taco Bell enthusiast. Others chimed in: \u201cThis the best Christmas present yet,\u201d wrote one user. \u201cMy new home away from home,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In a city with no shortage affordable (and excellent) Mexican food, why do people care so much about a Taco Bell that <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tastingtable.com\/1932478\/taco-bell-cantina-locations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tastingtable.com\/1932478\/taco-bell-cantina-locations\/\">doesn\u2019t even serve alcohol<\/a>? And could this Taco Bell possibly live up to Reddit\u2019s expectations? <\/p>\n<p>Is it normal to care this much about a Taco Bell?<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Taco Bell is as a much a fast food chain as it as a borderline \u201ccult,\u201d according to chef Reuben Asaram, one of Philly\u2019s most notable Taco Bell enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The 34-year-old found solace in his local Taco Bell after his family emigrated from India to Queens in 1993 and struggled to find vegetarian-friendly fast food options. The chain partially inspired Asaram\u2019s<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/taco-bell-crunchwrap-supreme-reuben-asaram-philadelphia-chef-20240228.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/taco-bell-crunchwrap-supreme-reuben-asaram-philadelphia-chef-20240228.html\"> Mexican and pan-Asian pop-up menus<\/a>, which led Taco Bell to name him one of three chefs allowed to <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/crunchwrap-supreme-reuben-asaram-taco-bell-20241016.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/crunchwrap-supreme-reuben-asaram-taco-bell-20241016.html\">reimagine the brand\u2019s iconic Crunchwrap Supreme<\/a> in 2024. Here\u2019s what he did.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">True Taco Bell devotees will go out of their way to try a new location, Asaram said, because \u201cthey\u2019re obsessed with getting the perfect bite\u201d and need to know if there\u2019s a reliable option nearby in case a<b> <\/b>Dorito Locos Taco emergency hits. Asaram is one of those people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIf I have a craving and know I\u2019m going to be in a random place, I have to know where the [nearest] good Taco Bell is,\u201d said Asaram while sipping a Baja Blast on Zoom. Asaram\u2019s preferred locations are the two closest to his house in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/cherry-hill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cherry Hill<\/a>. He must visit the University City outpost before it can be added to his reserves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Taco Bell has spent decades converting its Mexican food into a lifestyle brand with <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/taco-bell-superfan-getaway-cantinas-2024-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/taco-bell-superfan-getaway-cantinas-2024-9\">legions of devoted fans<\/a> by <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/video\/how-a-fast-food-chain-became-a-cultural-force\/hjyFFZmN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/video\/how-a-fast-food-chain-became-a-cultural-force\/hjyFFZmN\">pushing the boundaries of fast food marketing<\/a>. The brand occasionally rewards that devotion by letting fans <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foodandwine.com\/taco-bell-fan-style-menu-11851222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.foodandwine.com\/taco-bell-fan-style-menu-11851222\">contribute to the menu<\/a>, at one point even bringing back the Mexican pizza <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/taco-bell-save-the-mexican-pizza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/taco-bell-save-the-mexican-pizza\">based on an online petition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In Philly, Taco Bell is best known for bait-and-switches. On April Fools\u2019 Day 1986, the chain took out a full-page ad in The Inquirer <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/history\/taco-bell-april-fools-day-prank-20250331.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/history\/taco-bell-april-fools-day-prank-20250331.html\">claiming it purchased the Liberty Bell<\/a>, a prank that sparked both outrage and a boost in sales. Thirty-years later, the brand announced that it would plant the region\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/taco-bell-cantina-rittenhouse-square-alcohol-drinks-food-20240702.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/taco-bell-cantina-rittenhouse-square-alcohol-drinks-food-20240702.html\">first booze-serving Taco Bell Cantina at 1614 Chestnut Street<\/a>, only to reverse course and open a regular location after <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/withjoy.com\/anniewu30\/travel?bannerKey=rsvpsuccess&amp;utm_source=postrsvpredirect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/withjoy.com\/anniewu30\/travel?bannerKey=rsvpsuccess&amp;utm_source=postrsvpredirect\">failing to obtain a liquor license<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Perhaps the University City Taco Bell is a representation of what could\u2019ve been, four walls for Philly fans to place their shattered hopes and dreams. Others claimed they got food poisoning there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cEveryone I know that ever went into the Boston Market when it was open has a horror tale about it!\u201d wrote user rad_rascal, who broke the Taco Bell news.<\/p>\n<p>What are the vibes? <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The University City Taco Bell has all the makings of what some in the Taco Bell-loving community refer to as a <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DH6THs4xYvI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DH6THs4xYvI\/\">\u201cTaj-Mah-Bell,\u201d<\/a> or a higher-end location. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">This Taco Bell location is large, with a mix of booths, standard tables, and counter seating that isn\u2019t sticky: When I visited on a Wednesday afternoon in early January, employees were cleaning tables within minutes of a customer leaving. There were ample napkins (necessary for taco spillage), and the soda machine dumped out <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/annals-of-gastronomy\/pellet-ice-is-the-good-ice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/annals-of-gastronomy\/pellet-ice-is-the-good-ice\">pellet ice,<\/a> perfect for fountain drinks. It made my medium-sized Baja Blast taste extra electric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The only downside: Humans don\u2019t take your order. Customers use one of several digital kiosks spread across the store. That\u2019s a bummer for Asaram. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWhat makes a good Taco Bell franchise is mainly how the workers treat their guests,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>How\u2019s the food?<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Not Taj-Mah-Bell quality, I\u2019ll tell you that much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">I ordered a beef Crunchwrap Supreme, beef Doritos Locos Taco, cinnamon twists, and the all-important beef chalupa. The latter, Asaram said, is key for understanding the quality of a Taco Bell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cYou want to see all the components of your Taco Bell [at once]. You want to see if the fryer oil is fresh, if their vegetables and other garnishes are good,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A textbook chalupa is golden brown, Asaram said, with firm tomatoes and a layer of ground beef on the bottom that\u2019s roughly an inch thick. If the deep-fried flatbread shell has a sheen \u2014 or worse, approaches a russet shade of brown \u2014 it means the frier is dirty. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThat\u2019s when you know the Taco Bell [location] doesn\u2019t give a s\u2014 and you want to dip out,&#8221; said Asaram. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Despite receiving my chalupa in less than five minutes, it was cold. The fried shell was inexplicably both light brown and vaguely sparkly.  Who knows what that means for the fryer oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">They also skimped on the meat, which was not evenly distributed across the bottom. The Crunchwrap and taco had the same issues: cold and limp. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Perhaps, this was my fault. The prime time to visit a Taco Bell is between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Asaram said, when the morning and afternoon shifts switch over. I ordered closer to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">At that time, Taco Bell is \u201clike an omakase. They just make everything in front of you and hand it to you to eat,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Taco Bell, 1037 Chestnut Street, 215-925-1037.
