SUMMERLIN (KTNV) \u2014 As part of King Week, the Las Vegas Aces stepped away from the court Friday to take part in a STEM-focused summit designed to empower local students through education, technology and opportunity.<\/p>\n

Local students attended the event, which featured panels, keynote speakers and hands-on learning experiences aimed at exploring emerging technologies, career pathways and digital skills. The summit also honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with an emphasis on inclusion and access.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor these students, the future isn\u2019t something far off,\u201d said U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford. \u201cDoctor King stood for economic justice. He talked about the morality of creating opportunity that\u2019s inclusive for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Horsford, who described himself as a product of the Las Vegas community, said what stood out most was the energy in the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I see here today is potential,\u201d Horsford said. \u201cYes, it\u2019s the future \u2014 but the future is now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students echoed that sentiment, expressing excitement about learning how technology shapes the world around them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes me kind of excited because I know that our world is so advancing in the tech world,\u201d said student Lenelle Hickman. \u201cSo I think it\u2019s important to learn about it also.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another student, Brianna Cardoza, said the summit helped make technology feel more tangible.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like seeing what it does for us and how we use it \u2014 and how we grow from it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Aces assistant coach Charlene Thomas-Swinson helped connect those lessons to sports, explaining how technology plays a role in today\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology has been a big part of our game,\u201d Thomas-Swinson said. \u201cWhat our players utilize with their phones, who they\u2019re having to guard \u2014 it\u2019s all related to STEM and technology.\u201d<\/p>\n

But for Thomas-Swinson, the message went beyond technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took an encouraging voice to say you can,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what we\u2019re wanting to drive \u2014 saying that they can accomplish it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Organizers said the goal of the summit was to spark curiosity and confidence, while giving students tools they can build on long after King Week.<\/p>\n
