YONKERS, New York (WABC) — Several buildings and cars lit up in flames on Friday night in Yonkers as smoke blanketed the air.<\/p>\n
The fire started around 7 p.m. on School Street. It was all-hands-on-deck with every Yonkers firefighter on the scene as well as mutual aid brought in from neighboring departments to try to get flames under control.<\/p>\n
When firefighters first arrived on scene, there was a partial collapse that set cars on fire and ripped down charged power lines. One building completely collapsed.<\/p>\n
Mother Nature was not doing firefighters any favors – the ground was frozen and slippery and firefighters’ gear became frozen.<\/p>\n
Two buildings fully engulfed in flames and then reached a third and fourth building.<\/p>\n
Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick described some of the danger that firefighters encountered while battling the raging inferno.<\/p>\n
“As the building collapsed into the street almost simultaneously as the first arriving units were pulling up, they were confronted with one building fully involved collapsed, set a couple cars on fire, it was downed power lines, so it did hamper the initial efforts to getting into the building because of downed power lines,” Fitzpatrick said.<\/p>\n
No injuries were reported. It is still unclear how many residents this is impacting, but officials estimate roughly 30-50 people may be displaced.<\/p>\n
OEM is setting up a shelter for Friday night at the Cesar Chavez School and the Red Cross is assisting.<\/p>\n
The cause of the fire is under investigation.<\/p>\n
