The horror-thriller is expected to add $15 million through the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday frame. The last installment, helmed by \u201c28 Days Later\u201d director Danny Boyle, opened to $30 million over a traditional three-day frame, and ended its run with $70 million in the States and $150 million worldwide. That film cost $60 million, and \u201cThe Bone Temple\u201d was slightly more expensive to produce at $63 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFranchise mastermind Alex Garland penned the screenplay for \u201c28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,\u201d which follows Ralph Fiennes, Jack O\u2019Connell and Alfie Williams as they navigate the British countryside and fight off the deadly Rage Virus. The film has received <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/reviews\/28-years-later-the-bone-temple-review-ralph-fiennes-1236630014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rave reviews<\/a> from critics and an \u201cA-\u201d from audience pollster CinemaScore, a rare feat in the horror genre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d landed at No. 2 with $3.2 million on its fifth Friday in North American theaters. James Cameron\u2019s third trip to Pandora looks to add an estimated $17 million through the MLK frame. Domestic gross should hit about $367 million by Monday. Although \u201cFire and Ash\u2019s\u201d box office crown is lost for now, the film is expected to extend its winning streak through the weekend and notch a fifth week and No. 1. The first \u201cAvatar\u201d and its sequel \u201cThe Way of Water\u201d were both No. 1 at the box office for seven consecutive weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tElsewhere at the domestic box office, Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s Shakespearean drama \u201cHamnet\u201d expanded to 718 North American locations after several weeks in limited release. The film earned $13 million during its initial rollout and added another $370,000 on Friday. \u201cHamnet\u201d should pull in $1.6 million through MLK Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLionsgate\u2019s thriller \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/the-housemaid\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-housemaid\" data-tag=\"the-housemaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Housemaid<\/a>\u201d added $2.5 million on Friday for a third-place finish. Domestic earnings should hit $109 million through the holiday frame, an impressive feat considering it cost just $35 million to produce. A sequel is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/the-housemaid-sequel-sydney-sweeney-paul-feig-1236624121\/\">already in the works<\/a> with star Sydney Sweeney and director Paul Feig returning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tParamount\u2019s monkey horror \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/primate\/\" id=\"auto-tag_primate\" data-tag=\"primate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Primate<\/a>\u201d landed in sixth during its second Friday in North American theaters, hauling in another $1.4 million. The film opened solidly last weekend with $13.4 million worldwide against a $21 million budget. The domestic total should reach $6.2 million by Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRounding out the top five are several holdovers from the holiday season: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/marty-supreme\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marty-supreme\" data-tag=\"marty-supreme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marty Supreme<\/a>\u201d and \u201cZootopia 2.\u201d Disney\u2019s \u201cZootopia 2\u201d landed at No. 4 with $1.9 million domestically on Friday. The film is exhibiting astounding staying power, considering it was released in November. Rival estimates project a four-day gross of $12 million through MLK Day, which would raise the North American tally to $393 million. A24\u2019s \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d took fifth with an estimated $1.6 million domestic.
