{"id":52397,"date":"2025-07-09T21:36:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T21:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/52397\/"},"modified":"2025-07-09T21:36:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T21:36:11","slug":"koalas-spend-just-10-minutes-a-day-risking-their-lives-on-the-ground-tracking-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/52397\/","title":{"rendered":"Koalas spend just 10 minutes a day risking their lives on the ground, tracking suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Koalas spend 20 hours a day sleeping, and most of the rest eating.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That means they can only squeeze 10 minutes in each day to move between trees, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Unfortunately, this time on the ground is the riskiest part of their day, said Gabriella Sparkes, a PhD student at the University of Queensland, who led the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Roughly two-thirds of koala deaths occur when they&#8217;re on the ground \u2014 mostly from dog attacks and vehicle collisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s this disproportionate amount of death on the ground when we&#8217;re talking about an animal that should be spending most of its time in the trees,&#8221; Ms Sparkes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She presented the study today at the 2025 Society for Experimental Biology Annual Conference in Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>Fitting koalas with pedometers<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Sparkes and her team studied koalas around Pittsworth in Queensland, south-west of Toowoomba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a really agriculturally fragmented landscape,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You end up with tiny woodland patches, and then lots of strip vegetation along roads and along farms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">To understand how koalas spend their time, the researchers captured and fitted 10 animals with collars sporting GPS trackers and accelerometers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Accelerometers, which measure movement and speed, are also used in pedometers and phones to track steps.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A koala climbing a tree with a small white rectangle visible poking out the back of its neck.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/64a4def39873f71e0464698354f2e238\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The tracking collars weighed about 115 grams each. (Supplied: Dr Ami Fadhillah Amir Abdul Nasir, CC BY-NC-ND)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Unlike GPS trackers, they don&#8217;t need satellite connections to log data, which is useful when you&#8217;re studying something that loiters under trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This allowed the team to get much more granular data on koala movement than previous studies have allowed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Going through a koala&#8217;s accelerometer trace, we could identify all the climb-downs and the climb-ups, and that really helped us pinpoint these ground visits,&#8221; Ms Sparkes said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2024-09-04\/renewable-vs-fossil-fuel-land-clearing-of-koala-habitat\/103765336\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How much koala habitat is being cleared for renewables?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">We examined approved and proposed projects under federal environment legislation to look at how much koala habitat is being slated for destruction across several industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The koalas had their steps tracked for an average of eight days each before the team removed their collars \u2014 although they were unable to get one back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The koala&#8217;s out there somewhere,&#8221; Ms Sparkes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The researchers found koalas visited the ground an average of just two or three times a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These visits totalled less than 1 per cent of the koala&#8217;s day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One koala embarked on a 45-minute odyssey across a field one night, but that was an exception.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Generally, the koalas kept their time on the ground very brief \u2014 roughly 4.5 minutes on average, adding up to about 10 minutes a day.<\/p>\n<p>Location, location, season<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Sparkes said koalas in different areas of the research site moved differently in her study, with those living in strips along roadsides and fields spending more time on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Koalas in the wooded areas went to the ground more frequently in a night, but spent less time there,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This means, unsurprisingly, that cleared areas and roadsides are more dangerous locations for koalas to live.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A shady road lined with tall eucalyptus trees.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/5c33586eafbe25d24cc4bf1160228764\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In many areas, roadsides provide the highest concentration of trees. (Unsplash: Ch Photograpy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Karen Marsh, an ecologist at the Australian National University who wasn&#8217;t involved in the study, said koalas in different areas would potentially spend different amounts of time on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For example, feed trees might be more dispersed in open habitat such as paddocks or fragmented landscapes compared to forested areas,&#8221; Dr Marsh said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Time of year and conditions might also have an influence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Males might also spend more time on the ground in the breeding season when they are trying to locate females,&#8221; Dr Marsh said.<\/p>\n<p>Tracking koalas to help protect them<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mathew Crowther, an ecologist at the University of Sydney who also wasn&#8217;t involved in the research, said he was surprised to see how little time koalas in this study spent on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Koalas have to move a lot because of their quite specialised diets,&#8221; Professor Crowther said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;They have to find trees to eat, but not every tree is the same.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Koalas need to ensure they&#8217;re getting enough nutrients to justify digesting the toxins in eucalyptus leaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to make sure when you&#8217;re conserving habitat that you have enough trees for them to get to, and also enough feed trees as well,&#8221; Professor Crowther said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Koala clinging to tree with baby koala on its back, both looking at camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/c22dec121cbde4b53a3879c3aea8e2af\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Koalas need to think about shelter and safety as well as food when selecting trees.
