What would you like us to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\"><strong>Get in touch<\/strong><\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Scientists from Temple University\u2019s College of Engineering are researching whether the use of air bubbles can remove toxic chemicals from surface water before it makes its way to people\u2019s taps.\n<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to remove harmful PFAS chemicals and microplastics at the same time, and with sustainability in mind. The current mainstay for removing PFAS is effective, but also energy-intensive.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Water providers are required to treat the so-called \u201cforever chemicals\u201d over the next five years. However, there are no federal regulations for microplastics, which can also absorb and carry PFAS in the environment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to also focus on the microplastic, because PFAS adsorbs onto the surface of the microplastic,\u201d said Saiful Islam, a PhD student in Temple\u2019s environmental engineering program. \u201cMost of these emerging contaminants coexist in our environment, as well as the aquatic system, and all of these contaminants interact with each other.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>PFAS, a chemical widely used in consumer products such as nonstick cookware and waterproof clothing, as well as in firefighting foam, have been linked to serious <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/pfas-delaware-watersheds-report-toxic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">health problems, including some cancers<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>The health risks associated with PFAS, which can stay in the human bloodstream for years, have sparked numerous lawsuits against chemical manufacturers, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/dupont-spinoffs-reach-50-million-settlement-with-delaware-over-forever-chemicals-pollution\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DuPont<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/n-j-towns-sue-makers-of-forever-chemicals-saying-companies-must-pay-for-cleanup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3M<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Water providers are required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to reduce \u201cforever chemicals\u201d to almost zero by 2031.\n<\/p>\n<p>Islam said foam-based technology could help water providers meet the new regulations.\n<\/p>\n<p>His research, which is in the early stage, involves the use of air bubbles to create a foam that aims to capture PFAS and microplastics from surface water. The goal is to filter the contaminants before they enter the treatment plant.\n<\/p>\n<p>PFAS have hydrophobic tails \u2014 meaning they are repelled by water. When the air bubbles are introduced to the water, the hydrophobic tail is drawn to the bubbles and becomes trapped on its surface. As the bubbles rise, they carry the contaminants, which can then be separated and destroyed.\n<\/p>\n<p>The foam-based technology can avoid the use of toxic chemicals, and is more\u00a0 energy efficient than current methods of removing PFAS, Islam said.\n<\/p>\n<p>Most water providers use granular activated carbon, which is currently the most affordable and effective way of removing \u201cforever chemicals.\u201d However, <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/environmental-toll-of-eliminating-toxic-pfas-from-water\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the technology can have environmental impacts.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>To produce activated carbon, which is made from coal, it must be subjected to significantly high temperatures.
