{"id":525230,"date":"2026-01-18T13:37:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T13:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/525230\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T13:37:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T13:37:14","slug":"major-polar-vortex-disruption-brings-arctic-surges-across-north-america-and-europe-through-january-and-early-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/525230\/","title":{"rendered":"Major polar vortex disruption brings Arctic surges across North America and Europe through January and early February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A major disruption of the <a href=\"https:\/\/watchers.news\/epicenter\/how-the-polar-vortex-shapes-winter-weather-across-the-mid-latitudes\/\" data-type=\"epicenter\" data-id=\"237950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polar vortex<\/a> has begun, while a stronger Arctic outbreak is forecast across North America and Europe during the final week of January and into early February.<\/p>\n<p>Forecast models suggest that the vortex has become elongated and displaced from the pole following a <a href=\"https:\/\/watchers.news\/2026\/01\/02\/polar-vortex-disruption-expected-after-january-stratospheric-warming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sudden stratospheric warming (SSW)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Extended forecasts from the ECMWF and GFS models show downward propagation of stratospheric anomalies that could favor high-latitude blocking and southward transport of Arctic air. This pattern supports an increased probability of below-normal temperatures across large parts of the Northern Hemisphere later in the month.<\/p>\n<p>The coldest air will first hit western and central Canada before spreading into the northern and central United States toward the end of January. Below-normal temperatures and a high probability of snow are forecast across the Great Lakes and northeastern regions as Arctic air interacts with Atlantic moisture, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.severe-weather.eu\/global-weather\/new-polar-vortex-disruption-forecast-coldest-winter-air-united-states-canada-europe-fa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Severe Weather Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the eastern U.S., including the Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast, will experience an Arctic outbreak. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/predictions\/610day\/fxus06.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Climate Prediction Center\u2019s<\/a> extended-range temperature outlook shows a high probability of a prolonged cold phase lasting into early February if the upper-level blocking remains in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn Arctic cold front will bring below-average temperatures to the Plains beginning tonight. High temperatures in the teens and single digits over portions of the Northern\/Central Plains and Upper Midwest will be 20-30 degrees below average on Saturday. This frigid air mass will spread eastward into the Midwest and East Coast Saturday night into Sunday,\u201d said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/1CPy2diNbw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Weather Service (NWS)<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>New numerical forecast models suggest this current event will be followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/watchers.news\/2026\/01\/14\/forecast-models-indicate-polar-vortex-split-around-january-25-bringing-another-surge-of-arctic-air-to-the-us-and-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">split in the vortex\u2019s core around January 25<\/a>. The two halves of the core will drive an Arctic surge across Europe and North America through February.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a strong Greenland blocking ridge is forecast to drive Arctic air into Europe during this period.
