A boy is in a critical condition after being attacked by a large <\/strong>shark at a harbour beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.<\/p>\n

Emergency services were called to Hermitage Foreshore Walk near Shark Beach at Vaucluse about 4:20pm on Sunday afternoon following reports of a boy being bitten by a shark.<\/p>\n

NSW Police initially said they believed he was aged 12, but have updated that to 13.<\/p>\n

The NSW Ambulance service said the boy was in a critical condition with injuries to both legs and was being transported to the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Sunday evening, police said the injuries were “consistent with what is believed to have been a large shark”.<\/p>\n

They also said that he was rescued from the water by officers from Marine Area Command and Eastern Suburbs Police “within minutes” of the triple-0 call being made.<\/p>\n

“Water Police officer attached two medical tourniquets and was immediately given first aid on board the police vessel Water Police 41 for serious leg injuries before being transported to Rose Bay wharf, where NSW Ambulance Paramedics continued first aid,” police said.<\/p>\n

Footage from the scene showed him being treated by paramedics in a blue police rescue tent.<\/p>\n

Shark Beach has been closed and swimmers have been advised to avoid swimming in the water.<\/p>\n

It is expected that the NSW Department of Primary Industries will be called in to try to identify what sort of shark was involved in the attack.<\/p>\n

In September last year, much-loved surfer Mercury Psillakis<\/a> was mauled by a great white shark at Long Reef Beach on the Northern Beaches on the eve of Father’s Day.<\/p>\n

The 57-year-old was surfing with friends just after 9:30am and was about 100 metres from the sand when the shark bit him cutting his board in two.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He lost both legs.<\/p>\n

A couple of months later, two Swiss nationals swimming<\/a> at Kylies Beach in the Crowdy Bay National Park, south of Port Macquarie were attacked by a shark.<\/p>\n

The woman died and the man suffered critical injuries.
