Your health insurer offers a list of possible providers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You call.<\/p>\n<p>And call.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And call.<\/p>\n<p>Some providers tell you they\u2019re no longer taking your insurance. Others say they aren\u2019t accepting new patients. Still others are retired. One or two might be dead.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to your ghost network.<\/p>\n<p>At a <a href=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/training-events\/health-journalism-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Journalism 2025<\/a> panel about this practice, which pervades modern American health care, <a href=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/blog\/2024\/10\/reporter-max-blau-explains-insurance-ghost-networks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experts said the phenomenon is widely known among health insurers<\/a>. A ghost network is a health plan directory in which many of the listed providers aren\u2019t currently accepting patients insured by that plan. As a result, patients may find themselves calling dozens of providers, facing long delays to get treatment, paying high out-of-network costs, or simply going without care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an intended feature,\u201d said Wendell Potter, editor-in-chief of <a href=\"https:\/\/healthcareuncovered.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HEALTH CARE un-covered<\/a> who previously served as head of communications for both Cigna and Humana. \u201cIt\u2019s so maddening. We\u2019re talking about human beings here who are in desperate need of care.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He and the other panelists were unified in their advice that patients shouldn\u2019t spend too much time working their way through provider lists before coming back to their insurance company and filing a grievance. They also recommended \u201cbeing a squeaky wheel,\u201d appealing not just to state regulators but to members of congress and state representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Appeal, appeal, appeal.\u2019 That\u2019s what I tell everyone,\u201d said Sara Haviva Mark, founder and principal attorney of Mark Health Law. \u201cLet\u2019s change the calculus they\u2019re making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She suggested that provider directories that include the same person listed five or 10 times should trigger a review.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even in states, like California, with special laws in place to protect consumers in addition to the federal parity law, panelists say regulatory oversight is often fragmented and under-resourced. The insurance industry also has strong lobbyists who influence how regulations are written or make sure they are watered down before they are passed, Potter said.<\/p>\n<p>Panelists provided an array of tips for journalists interested in delving further into the issue of ghost networks. Among them:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sarah Soroken, a licensed marriage and family therapist from the San Francisco Bay Area, suggested reaching out to unions that cover health care workers, which can provide both context about the issue and offer the perspectives of front line health care workers.<\/li>\n<li>Potter recommended checking in with your own state\u2019s regulators.
