The Queensland government will not be participating in the federal government’s proposed gun buyback scheme, the ABC understands.<\/p>\n

State and territory governments are reviewing their firearms and hate speech legislation in the wake of last month’s Bondi terror attack.<\/p>\n

The ABC understands the Queensland government will join the Northern Territory and Tasmania in rejecting a national buyback scheme.<\/p>\n

Critically, the Howard federal government’s 1996 gun buyback had unanimous support across all states and territories.<\/p>\n

Following the Bondi attack in December, the federal government committed to overhauling hate speech laws and tackling gun reform, including a gun buyback scheme.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Saturday that gun law reform and tougher hate speech laws would be separated<\/a> and that racial vilification provisions would be dropped to speed up parliamentary approval after the federal Coalition and Greens declined to support an omnibus bill.<\/p>\n

The Queensland cabinet has agreed to introduce legislation in the first sitting of parliament next month following the Bondi terror attack.<\/p>\n

A Queensland government spokesperson said the government has “calmly and methodically worked through these complex issues to ensure we get the response right”.<\/p>\n

“We must also never be distracted from the core issue of antisemitism, and as a state we must continue to stand up to the formidable antisemitic forces unleashed at Bondi,” they said.<\/p>\n

“The cabinet process is underway and cabinet has resolved to introduce legislation during the first parliament sitting week of the year.”<\/p>\n

It is still unclear what the effect will be on the buyback scheme if state and territory governments do not line up behind the plan.<\/p>\n

Shadow police and crime prevention minister Glenn Butcher said it was “time [David Crisafulli] pulled his cabinet into line and acted to make Queensland safer place for generations”.<\/p>\n
