Shultz Memorial Lecture Series in Stanford, California, US, on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Jason Henry | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/federal-reserve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/12\/fed-jerome-powell-criminal-probe-nyt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerome Powell<\/a> plans to attend oral arguments on Wednesday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/18\/trump-supreme-court-lisa-cook-fed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supreme Court<\/a> in a case challenging the power of President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> to fire Fed Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/28\/trump-fed-lisa-cook-lawsuit-powell.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lisa Cook<\/a>, a person familiar with the situation told CNBC on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Powell&#8217;s planned attendance comes as the Fed chairman is under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/12\/fed-jerome-powell-criminal-probe-nyt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criminal investigation<\/a> by the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office in Washington, D.C., in connection with a multi-billion-dollar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/24\/fed-renovations-inside-the-project-the-trump-white-house-targeted.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renovation of the central bank&#8217;s headquarters<\/a> and his testimony to Congress about that project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/federal-reserve-jerome-powell-lisa-cook-supreme-court-7f135bd222013d4fe61eb8f03c663676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a> first reported on Powell&#8217;s plans.<\/p>\n<p>For Powell to personally attend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/12\/trump-fed-lisa-cook-supreme-court.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oral arguments<\/a> in such a case is unusual.<\/p>\n<p>But the question of whether a president can fire a Fed governor in the manner that Trump has attempted is viewed within the central bank as having potentially existential consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Powell, in an extraordinary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/speech\/powell20260111a.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public statement on Jan. 11<\/a>, revealed that he was under criminal investigation, and called its purported grounds a pretext for its real reason: the refusal of the Fed&#8217;s Board of Governors, which includes him and Cook as members, to lower interest rates as quickly as Trump demanded last year.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President,&#8221; Powell said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more CNBC politics coverage<\/p>\n<p>Trump said in late August that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/25\/trump-fires-lisa-cook-fed-powell.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">firing Cook<\/a> from the seven-member Fed Board, citing claims that she committed mortgage fraud in connection with two homes she owns. <\/p>\n<p>Cook denies any wrongdoing, and she has not been charged with any crime.<\/p>\n<p>She sued Trump in federal court in D.C., seeking to block her removal.<\/p>\n<p>A district court judge there on Sept. 9 barred Trump from firing her as the lawsuit continued. A federal appeals court soon after upheld that order.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice, in filings with the Supreme Court, has called the lower court orders barring Cook&#8217;s removal &#8220;yet another case of improper judicial interference with the President&#8217;s <br \/>removal authority \u2014 here, interference with the President&#8217;s authority to  remove members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors for cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Jerome Powell, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, during the Hoover Institution&#8217;s George P.
