{"id":528522,"date":"2026-01-19T23:34:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T23:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/528522\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T23:34:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T23:34:15","slug":"two-die-in-upstate-ny-ice-fishing-tragedy-but-miracle-6-year-old-survives-cops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/528522\/","title":{"rendered":"Two die in upstate NY ice fishing tragedy &#8212; but miracle 6-year-old survives: cops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two men died after falling through the ice of an upstate New York lake during an ice fishing trip \u2014 with the only survivor a 6-year-old boy who miraculously walked home, authorities said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Bryan LaPlante, 33, of Newton Falls, and 48-year-old Michael Booth, of Oswegatchie, and the youngster were out fishing on Chaumont Pond in St. Lawrence County on Sunday when their snowmobile broke through the ice, state police <a href=\"https:\/\/troopers.ny.gov\/news\/state-police-investigate-ice-fishing-incident-town-clifton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unaware of the tragedy, a relative, Patrick LaPlante, 51, grew worried and went out looking for the trio and spotted Bryan LaPlante in the icy water, according to the troopers.<\/p>\n<p>New York State police said they got a call about a fatal upstate ice fishing mishap around 7:40 p.m. on Sunday. Christopher Sadowski<\/p>\n<p>State troopers said two men and a young boy were ice fishing in St. Lawrence County Sunday when tragedy struck. Noah \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Police did not reveal what the relationship was between the two men.<\/p>\n<p>However, they said the older man crawled toward Bryan LaPlante as he struggled in the water \u2014 only to fall through the ice himself, the press release said. <\/p>\n<p>He was able to climb out of the water but lost sight of the two missing men.<\/p>\n<p>The St. Lawrence County Sheriff\u2019s Department helped rescue the two fishermen, but both were pronounced dead.
