The contemporary satire, from \u201cMotel Destino\u201d and \u201cFirebrand\u201d helmer A\u00efnouz, follows the fractured relationships between siblings forced to confront the truth about their mother\u2019s death. Tuttle said \u201cRosebush Pruning\u201d is a \u201ctwisted thriller about a privileged family unraveling when dark secrets emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnother hotly anticipated film making its premiere in competition is \u201cJosephine,\u201d directed by Beth de Ara\u00fajo and starring Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan as parents searching for justice after their young daughter witnesses a crime. The psychological thriller, which marks Ara\u00fajo\u2019s sophomore outing, will bow at Sundance and is one of the two films premiering internationally in competition at the Berlinale. Tuttle said the film is a \u201creally personal story\u201d for de Ara\u00fajo, who \u201ccaptures the trauma and the powerlessness of a family whose sense of safety has been shattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTuttle unpacked both the competition lineup and that of debut feature section Perspectives, which Tuttle inaugurated last year, on Tuesday morning alongside co-directors of film programming Jacqueline Lyanga and Michael St\u00fctz. The first competition title announced was Korn\u00e9l Mundrucz\u00f3\u2019s \u201cAt the Sea,\u201d which she described as an \u201cexpansive drama\u201d with an \u201cabsolutely enthralling\u201d performance from Amy Adams, who plays a former dancer confronting identity and trauma after rehab. The Hungarian filmmaker is best known for his 2020 drama \u201cPieces of a Woman,\u201d which earned its star Vanessa Kirby a best actress nomination at the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe fell in love with so many films this year and I think what was exciting for us as a selection committee is just how diverse these films are,\u201d Tuttle said during the streamed presentation, pointing that \u201clots of really interesting films for the market that haven\u2019t sold yet.\u201d She continued, \u201cWe really believe that there is something exciting for all kinds of audiences, whatever your tastes are, whatever cinema you like. You will find filmmakers working at the top of their game in this competition, but doing their own thing as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEuropean cinema royalty will also be on hand at the Berlinale with former jury president Juliette Binoche starring alongside Tom Courtenay in Lance Hammer\u2019s \u201cQueen at Sea,\u201d a tender examination of dementia, autonomy and marital devotion; and German superstar Sandra H\u00fcller (\u201cA Zone of Interest,\u201d \u201cAnatomy of a Fall\u201d) leading Markus Schleinzer\u2019s stark period piece \u201cRose,\u201d set in a suspicious Protestant village in the early 17th century. <\/p>\n<p>The competition lineup brings back several Berlinale alumni, including Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke\u2019s intimate black-and-white tale \u201cMoscas (\u201cFlies\u201d), his follow up to \u201cOlmo,\u201d an award-winning family drama produced by Plan B and Michel France which played at last year\u2019s Berlin; two-time Silver Bear winner Angela Schanelec (\u201cMusic,\u201d \u201cI Was at Home, But\u201d) who will present \u201cMeine Frau weint\u201d (\u201cMy Wife Cries\u201d); and Turkish-German director \u0130lker \u00c7atak, whose previous film \u201cThe Teachers Lounge\u201d won a prize at the Berlinale Panorama in 2023 and went on to earn an Oscar nomination. \u00c7atak comes back to Potsdamer Platz with \u201cGelbe Briefe\u201d (\u201cYellow Letters\u201d),\u201d which \u201cexplores the effects of escalating state oppression on a married couple from Ankara,\u201d said St\u00fctz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSenegalese helmer Alain Gomis, who won the Silver Bear in 2017 with \u201cFelicit\u00e9,\u201d returns with \u201cDao,\u201d which is set between France and Guinea Bissau, weaving themes of family and heritage. German director Eva Trobisch, whose 2024 movie \u201cIvo\u201d played in the Encounters section in 2024, will present \u201cEtwas ganz Besonderes\u201d (\u201cHome Stories\u201d), which boasts a \u201cmulti-layered script and an excellent ensemble of actors who embody this tale of a fractured German family torn between East and West,\u201d Tuttle said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOther anticipated films set to compete include <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/global\/anthony-chen-we-are-all-strangers-paradise-city-sales-1236629263\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWe Are All Strangers,\u201d <\/a>Singaporean filmmaker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/anthony-chen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Chen<\/a>\u2018s third and final film in his acclaimed \u201cGrowing Up\u201d trilogy, which includes Cannes\u2019 Camera d\u2019Or winner \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ilo-ilo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ilo Ilo<\/a>\u201d and \u201cWet Season,\u201d which opened at Toronto; and Chad\u2019s Mahamat-Saleh Haroun\u2019s mystical coming-of-age tale \u201cSoumsoum, la nuit des astres.\u201d Mahamat-Saleh Haroun is best known for his Cannes\u2019 jury prize-winning \u201cA Screaming Man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnimation is also in the competition mix with \u201cA New Dawn,\u201d the first solo feature by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, an artist of major anime works who is notably behind \u201cYour Name,\u201d a massive 2016 box office hit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTuttle has peppered the lineup with a few surprises, such as the jazz-inflected \u201cEverybody Digs Bill Evans\u201d from photographer and documentary filmmaker Grant Gee, who portrays the inner life of the legendary jazz pianist as he grieves the loss of his bassist and musical soulmate in a tragic car crash. The British film stars Anders Danielsen Lie, Bill Pullman and Laurie Metcalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPerspectives, Berlinale\u2019s section celebrating debut features, will bring 13 films \u2014 with a 14th potentially being announced soon \u2014 including the first helmed by \u201cAdolescence\u201d star Ashley Walters. Titled \u201cAnimol,\u201d the cast list includes his \u201cAdolescence\u201d co-star Stephen Graham and follows boys at a young offender institution. Also of interest is Dara Van Dusen\u2019s \u201cA Prayer for the Dying,\u201d a Western starring Johnny Flynn and John C. Reilly as a Civil War veteran and sheriff fighting to save their small town amid an epidemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs previously announced, Afghan director Shahrbanoo Sadat\u2019s romantic comedy \u201cNo Good Men\u201d\u00a0is kicking off the festival and celebrated German director\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/wim-wenders\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wim Wenders<\/a>\u00a0set to succeed Todd Haynes as jury president.
