{"id":53041,"date":"2025-07-10T03:11:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T03:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/53041\/"},"modified":"2025-07-10T03:11:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T03:11:10","slug":"more-tariff-letters-but-investors-focus-on-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/53041\/","title":{"rendered":"More tariff letters, but investors focus on AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aerial photo taken on April 3, 2025 shows a view of a port in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. <\/p>\n<p>Wang Tiancong | Xinhua News Agency | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Just this morning Singapore time, U.S. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/trump-says-50percent-tariff-on-copper-will-begin-aug-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said <\/a>that the 50% tariff on copper imports, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/08\/trump-tariffs-copper-trade.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he announced earlier on Tuesday<\/a>, will begin on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Trump posted a fresh slate of tariff letters on goods from at least seven more countries, including Mexico, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2024\/10\/25\/how-china-is-using-mexico-as-a-backdoor-to-avoid-us-tariffs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the no. 1 importer of goods to the U.S.<\/a>, Philippines, Brunei and Sri Lanka.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the president took a few steps further with Brazil by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/trump-brazil-tariffs-bolsonaro.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threatening a 50% tariff on the country<\/a>. This is partly in response to the ongoing trial of his vocal ally Jair Bolsonaro over the role of Brazil&#8217;s former president in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/19\/brazils-ex-president-bolsonaro-charged-in-alleged-coup-plot.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an alleged coup<\/a> to overturn his 2022 reelection loss.<\/p>\n<p>The 50% tariff on Brazil marks the largest duties rate that the White House has imposed on its trading partners in the recent round of new levies, which are set to begin on Aug. 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it appears that investors have decided to approach Trump&#8217;s tariffs by not responding at all. They seem to have shifted their focus away from tariff developments and instead rekindled their appetite for artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, traders boosted shares of Nvidia, causing the company to be the first in the world to touch a market capitalization of $4 trillion. Other major tech names also rose, including Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Alphabet.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>What you need to know today<\/p>\n<p><strong>New tariff developments. <\/strong>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/trump-tariff-letters-trade.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed updated tariff rates<\/a> on the Philippines, Brunei, Moldova, Algeria, Iraq, Libya and Sri Lanka, via screenshots on Truth Social. The 50% duty on copper imports is set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/trump-says-50percent-tariff-on-copper-will-begin-aug-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kick in on Aug. 1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. stocks rise as investor appetite for AI rekindles. <\/strong>On Wednesday, all three major U.S. benchmarks were up. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.IXIC\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasdaq Composite<\/a> advanced 0.94% to close at a new high of 20,611.34. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.STOXX\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stoxx Europe 600<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/european-markets-on-weds-july-9-stoxx-600-ftse-dax-cac-tariffs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climbed 0.78%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starbucks China draws bids of up to $10 billion. <\/strong>About 30 domestic and foreign private equity firms in China have submitted non-binding offers for the coffee chain&#8217;s Chinese business, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/starbucks-china-attracts-bids-valuing-the-coffee-chain-at-up-to-10-billion.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sources familiar with the deal told CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most Fed officials see rate cuts coming, but are split on how many.<\/strong> Officials saw tariff-induced inflation pressures as potentially &#8220;temporary and modest&#8221; while economic growth and hiring could weaken, minutes from the June 17-18 meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/most-fed-officials-see-rate-cuts-coming-but-opinions-vary-widely-on-how-many-minutes-show.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">released Wednesday showed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[PRO] AI is still reigning over the market. <\/strong>Chipmaker Nvidia briefly passed $4 trillion in market value on Wednesday, the first company ever to do so. Being the world&#8217;s most valuable company is not a sign of permanent superiority.
