(ABC News: Gavin Coote)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Perfect storm&#8217; for attracting sharks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This recent spate of attacks is the highest number in a month since mid-2020, when there were five recorded attacks in NSW in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the past decade, there has been an average of 10 shark attacks in NSW a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, Dr Rummer said shark populations were declining worldwide and they were among the &#8220;most threatened groups of organisms in the ocean&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We often hear that there are more sharks, but the reality is that there are more people in the water than ever before, and that naturally increases the chance of encounters,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Climate change is one of the key problems faced by sharks, as it leads to warmer waters, more severe marine heatwaves and an increase in storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Those changing conditions are going to change when and where sharks are, and, of course, that&#8217;s going to change when we&#8217;re going to have those interactions with humans,&#8221; Dr Rummer said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dr Jodie Rummer\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f56e68439aa6f6cb3a43e477a18b2ff6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dr Rummer says shark populations are declining worldwide.
