Grace Van Patten<\/strong> and Jackson White<\/strong> were engaged in a heated fight, in character while shooting season three of their Hulu drama, Tell Me Lies<\/a>, when an unexpected email changed the atmosphere. \u201cIt was kind of a hard day\u2014intense scenes and we were just low-energy,\u201d she recalls. The message revealed that the costars and real-life couple had been cast in a new project: Calvin Klein<\/a>\u2019s Valentine\u2019s Day campaign. \u201cWe literally jumped up and down,\u201d Van Patten exclusively tells Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never do that,\u201d White adds, curled up next to Van Patten on a leather couch in the Cond\u00e9 Nast offices in downtown Manhattan. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t fight in the scene\u2014we were too happy.\u201d It was a needed mood boost for the leads, who, over three seasons of playing Tell Me Lies\u2019 toxic estranged exes<\/a>, Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco, have heard their fair share of romantic horror stories from the show\u2019s fan base. Dating in 2026 \u201cseems really scary, honestly,\u201d Van Patten says, \u201cbut it\u2019s always the best compliment when people come up to me and say that watching this show encouraged them to get out of a toxic relationship. If this show can do that, then it\u2019s worth making forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grinning, White can\u2019t help but point out that Tell Me Lies \u201calso makes people call their ex at midnight.\u201d Embodying a character as evil as Stephen has made the far more relaxed White\u2014whose real-life mother, Katey Sagal,<\/strong> plays his character\u2019s troubled mother on the series\u2014relish the character\u2019s small misfortunes. When asked about his favorite Stephen moment of season three, White points to a scene in which he kicks a printer with a paper jam. \u201cYou\u2019re proud of that one,\u201d Van Patten quips.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was fun to kick the shit out of a printer!\u201d White exclaims. \u201cThe mundane is really exciting on the show because it\u2019s usually very loaded up. So doing a little silly thing is always great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not long after White and Van Patten met while auditioning for Tell Me Lies<\/a>, the two bonded over \u201ca shared dream\u201d to work with Calvin Klein, a fashion house that has cast actors including Jeremy Allen White<\/a>, Chlo\u00eb Sevigny<\/a>, Greta Lee<\/a>,<\/strong> and Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong><\/a> in its recent campaigns. \u201cWhen we first met, we were driving, we passed one of the Calvin billboards, and we were like, \u2018We want to do one of those,\u2019\u201d White says. \u201cWe literally said that in the car.\u201d<\/p>\n
