{"id":53092,"date":"2025-07-10T03:38:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T03:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/53092\/"},"modified":"2025-07-10T03:38:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T03:38:11","slug":"green-ribbons-in-alamo-heights-honor-those-missing-in-floods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/53092\/","title":{"rendered":"Green ribbons in Alamo Heights honor those missing in floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alamo Heights in San Antonio is a tight-knit community, the kind of place where kids who start kindergarten together also graduate from high school together and stay friends long after.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When community members learned that one of their own went missing in the devastating <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-hill-country-floods-missing-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">July 4 flash flooding<\/a>, they quickly thought of a way to show their support: tying green ribbons around the trees and streetlights lining the streets of Alamo Heights.<\/p>\n<p>Never miss San Antonio Report&#8217;s biggest stories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Sign up for <strong>The Recap<\/strong>, a newsletter rundown of the most important news, delivered every Monday and Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Kellyanne Lytal,<strong> <\/strong>a student at Cambridge Elementary in the Alamo Heights Independent School District, is one of several campers that went missing from Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian camp located in Hunt on the banks of the Guadalupe River.<\/p>\n<p>Early Friday morning, the river rose 25 feet within two hours, tearing trees from their roots and resulting in at least 109 deaths. More than 160 people are still missing, including five children and a counselor from Camp Mystic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sareport\/?utm_source=sareport-org&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=instagram-folo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752118690_668_Follow-us-on-Instagram.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5232125\" width=\"289\" height=\"89\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kellyanne\u2019s father, Trinity University football offensive coordinator Wade Lytal, went to social media July 6 to ask community members to pray for his daughter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsking for all prayers for a miracle for my baby girl Kellyanne. She is still one of the Mystic Campers who is unaccounted for,\u201d Lytal <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CoachLytal?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1941829624197009731%7Ctwgr%5E28c8f195064d2e506b9ddc4e9c34108cd9b30aa5%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ksat.com%2Fnews%2Flocal%2F2025%2F07%2F07%2Ftrinity-football-players-assist-with-hill-country-recovery-amid-report-of-coachs-missing-daughter-from-camp-mystic%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ll never forget when she told me she had a lead solo in the Christmas Pageant. She is absolutely fearless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The community responded immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a heavy pull on all of us,\u201d said Marianne DiSabato, a longtime resident and retired AHISD teacher who lives down the street from the Lytal family on Abiso Avenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DiSabato tied a green ribbon around a tree in her front yard Monday morning after learning about the effort from some local moms. Since then, she\u2019s visited several stores to buy more green ribbon for her neighbors, in some places not finding any left.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s to show the family no one\u2019s forgetting them,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re all hoping for a miracle.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The green ribbons are meant to represent the official colors of Camp Mystic.\u00a0Green can also represent safety, renewal, harmony or nature \u2014 and it\u2019s the color many campers wore in widely shared photos on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SchoolSigntightleft.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5410139\"  \/>Green ribbons are tied around the sign outside Cambridge Elementary in Alamo Heights. Credit: Diego Medel\/San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Two brightly colored green bows adorn Cambridge Elementary\u2019s welcome sign on Townsend Avenue and Cambridge Oval. It\u2019s the first place the ribbons went up, so that the Lytal family could see community cares, DiSabato added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The San Antonio Zoo will also illuminate its parking garage overlooking U.S. Route 281 in green lights through the end of July to honor \u201ca local family\u2019s request to display green ribbons in observance of their missing daughter,\u201d a spokesperson said on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Heritage Pediatrics, a clinic that serves the Alamo Heights neighborhood, put together \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/14Fe87yMXzM\/?mibextid=wwXIfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">tree ribbon packages<\/a>\u201d for residents who can\u2019t find any more green ribbon in stores and would like to show their support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a message to AHISD families, Superintendent Dana Bashara said many students were campers at other locations along the river who experienced the \u201cfear and trauma\u201d of the floods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The district partnered with Alamo Heights Baptist Church to offer counseling services earlier this week, and the Children\u2019s Bereavement Center of South Texas will offer healing circles open to the public on July 11 from noon to 1 p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn times like these, it is more important than ever that we lean on one another and offer compassion, love and support,\u201d Bashara said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/StreetSign-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5410141\"  \/>The intersection of Broadway and Ogden in Alamo Heights is adorned with a green ribbon to honor those affected by deadly July 4 flooding. DiSabato, who worked there for 25 years, said any student\u2019s absence will be felt deeply.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The impact of the Guadalupe River flooding can also be felt at Trinity University, which is nestled off 218 behind the zoo parking structure.<\/p>\n<p>KSAT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/07\/07\/trinity-football-players-assist-with-hill-country-recovery-amid-report-of-coachs-missing-daughter-from-camp-mystic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a> Tuesday that the university\u2019s head coach Jerheme Urban, along with several football players, went to the disaster site to help look for Kellyanne and Aidan Heartfield, a marketing major at Trinity who is also missing after the floods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones as search and rescue efforts continue.
