{"id":531346,"date":"2026-01-21T04:00:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T04:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/531346\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T04:00:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T04:00:13","slug":"ifc-shudder-buy-horror-film-saccharine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/531346\/","title":{"rendered":"IFC, Shudder Buy Horror Film &#8216;Saccharine&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/sundance-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sundance-film-festival\" data-tag=\"sundance-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sundance Film Festival<\/a> doesn\u2019t kick off until Thursday, but <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/independent-film-company\/\" id=\"auto-tag_independent-film-company\" data-tag=\"independent-film-company\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Independent Film Company<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/shudder\/\" id=\"auto-tag_shudder\" data-tag=\"shudder\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shudder<\/a> wasted no time in striking first by acquiring Natalie Erika James\u2019 supernatural body horror \u201cSaccharine\u201d from XYZ Films ahead of its world premiere. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe film tells the story of a lovelorn medical student who is terrorized by a sinister force after taking part in an obscure weight-loss craze: eating human ashes. It stars Midori Francis (\u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d), Danielle Macdonald (\u201cPatti Cake$\u201d) and Madeleine Madden (\u201cThe Wheel of Time\u201d). \u201cSaccharine\u201d was written and directed by James. It\u2019s her third feature following her psychological horror debut \u201cRelic,\u201d which was distributed by IFC Midnight, and \u201cApartment 7A,\u201d a prequel to \u201cRosemary\u2019s Baby\u201d starring Julia Garner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m absolutely thrilled to be working with IFC and Shudder again after our experience releasing \u2018Relic\u2019 together in 2020,\u201d James said. \u201cThey\u2019re an incredible team with a deep understanding of genre and a real commitment to filmmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe deal includes rights in North America and the U.K. \u201cSaccharine\u201d will open in theaters ahead of its Shudder debut at some point in 2026. It will screen at this year\u2019s Sundance, which is the last edition of the festival to be held in Park City, Utah. In 2027, Sundance will relocate to Boulder, Colo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cNatalie announced herself as a singular force with her haunting debut \u2018Relic,\u2019 a film that we were privileged to bring to audiences in 2020 via IFC Midnight,\u201d said Emily Gotto, senior vice president of acquisitions and productions at Shudder. \u201cWith \u2018Saccharine,\u2019 she returns with a chilling, utterly original vision that pierces our deepest obsessions with body image, reaffirming her work as a leading voice in genre cinema\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSaccharine\u201d is a Carver Films and Thrum Films Production. It was financed by Screen Australia in conjunction with XYZ Films, IPR.VC and Stan, in association with VicScreen. The film is produced by James, Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw.
