Could Alligator Alcatraz threaten it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Surrounded by the low hum of swamp bugs, Anthony Sleiman pointed his camera to the west. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The conservation photographer was more than 15 miles from the state\u2019s newly built immigrant detention center, dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2025\/07\/01\/inside-alligator-alcatraz-immigration-center-trump-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2025\/07\/01\/inside-alligator-alcatraz-immigration-center-trump-desantis\/\">Alligator Alcatraz<\/a>. But just before 10 p.m. on July 1, he could see the site\u2019s glow with his naked eye. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sleiman, whose night-sky Everglades images were featured last year in the national park\u2019s visitor center, is concerned that the industrial lights emitting from the facility could harm the protected wildlife in a preserve globally recognized for its dark skies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He\u2019s not alone: The leading international authority that certifies \u201cdark sky\u201d parks says the artificial light from Alligator Alcatraz \u201cdirectly threatens\u201d the preserve\u2019s renowned natural darkness and disrupts endangered nocturnal wildlife. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s one of the latest environmental and human rights concerns stemming from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2025\/06\/28\/desantis-alligator-alcatraz-emergency-powers-immigration-detention-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2025\/06\/28\/desantis-alligator-alcatraz-emergency-powers-immigration-detention-trump\/\">quickly built detention center in Collier County<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After a rigorous process with the U.S. National Park Service, DarkSky International in 2016 designated Florida\u2019s Big Cypress National Preserve as the nation\u2019s first preserve to achieve \u201cdark sky\u201d status, meaning it\u2019s home to one of the last remaining reservoirs of darkness unimpeded by the glow of human development. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But the state\u2019s detention center, built for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2025\/07\/02\/alligator-alcatraz-immigration-desantis-trump-ice-detainees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2025\/07\/02\/alligator-alcatraz-immigration-desantis-trump-ice-detainees\/\">immigrant detainees<\/a>, runs counter to the preserve\u2019s commitment to protecting the darkness many species rely on, the group said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe development represents a significant step backward for dark sky conservation efforts in a region where considerable resources have been invested in Everglades restoration,\u201d the group said in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cProtecting the natural night environment is an integral part of broader ecosystem health and resilience.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Anthony Sleiman, a conservation photographer who documents the Florida Everglades, said he took this photo on the night of July 2. Satellite imagery from NASA also shows the facility standing out amid dark wilderness on all sides. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Whether Big Cypress could keep its designation as a \u201cdark sky\u201d preserve depends on an annual review of light pollution data, according to Ruskin Hartley, executive director of DarkSky International. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Big Cypress is revered by astronomers, photographers and parkgoers as a nighttime sanctuary from the light pollution emitting from Miami to the east and Naples to the west. [\u00a0NASA Worldview\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a court filing Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/environment\/2025\/06\/27\/florida-alligator-alcatraz-lawsuit-everglades-desantis-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/environment\/2025\/06\/27\/florida-alligator-alcatraz-lawsuit-everglades-desantis-immigration\/\">environmental groups<\/a> suing local, state and federal officials to stop activity at the detention center underscored what they called violations of environmental law and argued the night sky over Big Cypress \u201cnow glows like Yankee Stadium, visible from 15-miles away.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The two advocacy groups, Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity, say the artificial lighting is defiling the night sky, harming public enjoyment and disrupting the habitat of species that thrive at night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">For one, the Florida bonneted bat, an exceedingly rare species living in habitat around the detention center, relies on the cover of night to hunt and can be deterred by artificial lights. Florida panthers, too, are more active at night, and Florida\u2019s wildlife agency considers light pollution a form of habitat loss. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Officials have not responded to questions from the Times about the state\u2019s lighting at the facility, including whether there\u2019s any consideration for adhering to the preserve\u2019s dark sky designation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Videos from June 26 show industrial flatbed trucks shuttling what appear to be Sunbelt temporary lighting structures into the entrance of the detention center, according to footage taken by Jessica Namath, founder of the advocacy group Floridians for Public Lands. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It wasn\u2019t easy for Big Cypress National Preserve to become the nation\u2019s first \u201cdark sky\u201d park in 2016: Staff had to retrofit hundreds of light fixtures and create guidelines for when and where lights could be turned on at night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In its application for Big Cypress to be considered, the park service noted the presence of the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport within the preserve\u2019s boundaries \u2014 the site where the detention center now stands. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The only night use for the airport, staff wrote, would be emergency landings, and there hadn\u2019t been one in 25 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThere are no plans to expand or change the layout or usage of the (airport),\u201d staff wrote at the time. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"202507011555MCT_____PHOTO____US-NEWS-LIVE-UPDATES-PROTESTORS-RALLY-AGAINST-9-MI\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg&quot; viewBox=&quot;0 0 620 377&quot;\/%3E\" style=\"transition:opacity 0.5s ease 0.5s;opacity:0\" title=\"202507011555MCT_____PHOTO____US-NEWS-LIVE-UPDATES-PROTESTORS-RALLY-AGAINST-9-MI\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"620\" height=\"auto\"\/>Trucks arrive at the entrance of Alligator Alcatraz on June 25. [\u00a0AL DIAZ  |  Miami Herald\/TNS\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">John Barentine, who oversaw the dark sky program when Big Cypress was being considered, said the airport\u2019s current use, with lighting surrounding the detention facility, would have likely disqualified the preserve from being named a dark sky park. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt would\u2019ve been a problem,\u201d Barentine said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He compared the situation to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. When that park applied to be named a dark sky park, lighting from a Job Corps center drew out the process for years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">DarkSky International said in its statement that the<b> <\/b>construction of the detention facility \u201cdemands the most rigorous application of dark-sky friendly lighting principles.\u201d Since 1988, the group has designated about 200 places across the world that work to fend off light pollution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA lot of people think the Everglades goes to sleep at sunset, but that\u2019s not true. That\u2019s when it\u2019s waking up,\u201d Sleiman said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But now, dusk also awakens the lights of what looks like a baseball stadium from afar. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI want people to know the Everglades is one of the last places in Florida where we have these night skies,\u201d Sleiman said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Tampa Bay Times launched the Environment Hub in 2025 to focus on some of Florida\u2018s most urgent and enduring challenges.
