Wes Moore that could lead to Democrats taking all eight of the state’s seats.

Maryland Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, who is also the chair of the redistricting commission, released a statement Tuesday afternoon to announce the recommendation.

“Tonight, the Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission voted to recommend a new congressional map concept to the Governor and the General Assembly. This recommendation reflects the work of Marylanders—built from public map submissions, shaped by hours of community feedback, and developed through a transparent redistricting process.

“From the start, our commitment has been simple: put Marylanders in the driver’s seat. This process has been conducted in the open, with opportunities for the public to participate, weigh in, and submit their own map proposals for consideration. All Marylanders—regardless of party, background, or zip code—can engage with this process, see the options, and make their voice heard.

“At a moment when other states are moving aggressively to redraw maps, and when fundamental voting rights protections face renewed threats, Maryland has a responsibility to lead with urgency. Our goal is to ensure our congressional delegation reflects the will of the people, protects representation for historically underrepresented communities, and gives Marylanders a Congress that can serve as a real check on this President.

“This vote is not the end of public input—it’s a next step forward. We encourage Marylanders to continue participating, reviewing the proposed map, and sharing feedback as the General Assembly debates and votes on this map.”

| RELATED: Maryland leaders react to Gov. Moore’s Redistricting Commission announcement

The new map has Maryland’s 1st District, currently represented by Republican Rep. Andy Harris, stretch across the Chesapeake Bay from the Eastern Shore into Anne Arundel and Howard counties.

Ahead of a closed-door meeting between the commission, Moore spoke to reporters and defended the commission’s process as transparent.

“I’m looking forward to hearing the conclusion from the redistricting commission for the months of hard work this bipartisan commission has gotten done, and hearing their recommendation and having it go to the General Assembly,” Moore said.

The commission is made up of three Democrats and one Republican. One of its members, Senate President Bill Ferguson, has repeatedly stated his opposition to midcycle redistricting.

Ferguson called the new map “objectively unconstitutional” and that a “flawed product” was put forward.

“The Governor’s Commission recommended a map today that is objectively unconstitutional and jeopardizes Maryland’s existing map. From the outset, the Senate’s position has been consistent: in this important moment, Maryland cannot risk going backwards by giving the Trump Administration another seat or two in Congress from Maryland’s delegation.

“Further, this map fails the Governor’s own test. It breaks apart more neighborhoods and communities than our existing map, and it fails the constitutional requirement of one person, one vote. We heard from no Boards of Elections. We heard nothing from the Office of the Attorney General of Maryland, which would have to defend this process and outcome. We heard no testimony to the impact on our election cycle. Ultimately, a flawed process has delivered a flawed product. Regardless of any disagreement on this issue, the Senate of Maryland will remain steadfast and aligned with our partners in the House and the Governor’s office to focus our work this Session on doing what it takes to make our State more affordable, grow our economy, and protect our State’s residents from an increasingly lawless federal administration.”

| RELATED: Maryland Gov. This Commission was merely a drawn-out political sham with a pre-determined outcome: to rid Maryland of any Republican representation in Congress and disenfranchise voters in Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore. Nothing drives this home more than their absurd end product.”

“Maryland has a long and storied history of being one of the worst gerrymandered states in America, and the Commission’s actions today further solidifies that legacy,” House Minority Whip Jesse Pippy said. “It is a shame that, with all the challenges facing Maryland – budget deficits, children dying in state custody, Marylanders unable to afford their electric bills, that this has been the Governor’s priority.
