{"id":531982,"date":"2026-01-21T10:46:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T10:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/531982\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T10:46:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T10:46:17","slug":"israels-netanyahu-agrees-to-join-trumps-board-of-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/531982\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel&#8217;s Netanyahu agrees to join Trump\u2019s Board of Peace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JERUSALEM (AP) \u2014 Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that he has agreed to join U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hamas-israel-ceasefire-netanyahu-trump-6a29026f0308ba3757c975810e2f90c4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Board of Peace<\/a> in a departure from an earlier stance when his office criticized the makeup of the board\u2019s committee tasked with overseeing Gaza. <\/p>\n<p>Norway and Sweden, meanwhile, said they would not be joining the board at this stage, following in the footsteps of France, which has expressed concern the board could seek to replace the United Nations as the mediator in global conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>Chaired by Trump, the board was originally envisaged as a small group of world leaders overseeing the Gaza ceasefire plan. The Trump administration\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-board-of-peace-gaza-un-b27d17190177041865c6827acd042e56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ambitions have since expanded<\/a> into a more sprawling concept, with Trump extending <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-gaza-trump-board-79586f87db667d61dbbd6a4e59dcb5cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invitations to dozens of nations<\/a> and hinting the board will soon broker global conflicts. <\/p>\n<p>Trump headed for the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, where he is expected to provide more details about the board. <\/p>\n<p>Israel, Azerbaijan and Kosovo say yes, Norway and Sweden say no<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu\u2019s office had previously said the composition of the Gaza executive committee \u2014 which includes Turkey, Israel\u2019s key regional rival \u2014 was not coordinated with the Israeli government and ran \u201ccontrary to its policy,\u201d without clarifying its objections.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu\u2019s decision to join the board could now put him in conflict with some of the far-right allies in his coalition, such as Israel\u2019s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has criticized the board and called for Israel to take unilateral responsibility for Gaza\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev said Wednesday he was also joining, as did Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani. <\/p>\n<p>Norway\u2019s state secretary, Kristoffer Thoner, said in a statement Wednesday that Norway would not join the board because it \u201craises a number of questions that requires further dialogue with the United States.\u201d He said Norway would not attend the signing ceremony in Davos.<\/p>\n<p>Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on the sidelines of Davos on Wednesday that his country isn\u2019t signing up for the board as the text currently stands, Swedish news agency TT reported. Sweden hasn\u2019t yet formally responded.<\/p>\n<p>Much of Western Europe, Russia and China have not said whether they will join<\/p>\n<p>Those who previously joined the board are the United Arab Emirates, Armenia, Morocco, Vietnam, Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan and Argentina. Bahrain and Egypt said Wednesday they would also join.<\/p>\n<p>Invitation letters from Trump also have been sent to the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, China, Egypt, Paraguay, Turkey, India, Slovenia, Croatia, Thailand and the European Union\u2019s executive arm. <\/p>\n<p>There are many unanswered questions. It was not immediately clear how many other leaders would receive invitations and how broad the board\u2019s mandate will be. When asked by a reporter on Tuesday if the board should replace the United Nations, Trump said: \u201cIt might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The makeup of the board<\/p>\n<p>Under the ceasefire deal, the board\u2019s Gaza executive committee will be in charge of implementing the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mideast-wars-israel-hamas-gaza-trump-witkoff-bb39015d25aeb627a5b9ce73dd4e1155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tough second phase<\/a> of the agreement. That includes deploying an international security force, disarming the Palestinian militant Hamas group and rebuilding the war-devastated territory. It will also supervise a newly appointed committee of Palestinian technocrats who will be running Gaza\u2019s day-to-day affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The White House says its members include Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan; Qatari diplomat Ali Al-Thawadi; Hassan Rashad, director of Egypt\u2019s General Intelligence Agency; Emirati minister Reem Al-Hashimy; Israeli businessman Yakir Gabay; and Sigrid Kaag, the Netherlands\u2019 former deputy prime minister and a Mideast expert.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bulgaria-middle-east-gaza-nikolay-mladenov-5b4f02c2deb0ba621951c71e6ac60dd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nickolay Mladenov<\/a>, a former Bulgarian politician and U.N.
