(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> An estimated quarter-million demonstrators poured into downtown to draw attention to women\u2019s rights, as well as  civil rights, immigration and racial justice. Organizers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/01\/21\/thousands-fill-loop-after-womens-march-rally-in-chicago-draws-estimated-250000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women\u2019s March on Chicago<\/a> said the event was planned for the day after President Donald Trump\u2019s inauguration. Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators packed the streets of several other cities, from New York to Los Angeles and Paris to Sydney.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weather records <\/strong>(from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/climate?wfo=lot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High temperature: <strong>62 degrees<\/strong> (1906)<\/li>\n<li>Low temperature: <strong>Minus 22 degrees<\/strong> (1984)<\/li>\n<li>Precipitation: <strong>1.49 inches<\/strong> (1916)<\/li>\n<li>Snowfall: <strong>5 inches<\/strong> (1958)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1848:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org\/pages\/1235.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The telegraph<\/a> reached Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"George Halas, owner of the Chicago Bears, flips the opening game coin toss to determine which team will receive the kickoff in Super Bowl XIII, Jan. 21, 1979, in Miami. (Phil Sandlin\/AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> Chicago Bears owner and former coach George Halas arrived at Super Bowl XIII at the Orange Bowl in Miami in an antique car where he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y9ceVwCdLU0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flipped a 1920 gold piece<\/a> \u2014 the same year the NFL was founded \u2014 as part of the game\u2019s ceremonial coin toss. Halas purchased the coin just for the occasion for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-halas-flips-and-pays-f\/163100802\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$317<\/a>. Halas gave the coin to the loser of the flip \u2014 the Pittsburgh Steelers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mrfdWMNiM7\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/01\/09\/chicago-history-january-9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Today in Chicago History: \u2018McCaskey, you\u2019re a bum!\u2019 The coin flip that cost the Chicago Bears Terry Bradshaw.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It was the second time in a decade the Bears had been involved in a fateful coin flip with the Steelers. The last one had a grim ending for the Bears \u2014 they lost the No. 1 draft pick. (Anthony Souffle\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2015\/01\/21\/hey-hey-its-the-snow-monkeys-at-lincoln-park-zoo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regenstein Macaque Forest<\/a> opened.
