{"id":532115,"date":"2026-01-21T12:11:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T12:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/532115\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T12:11:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T12:11:11","slug":"san-diego-ferries-silvergate-cabrillo-join-national-register-or-historic-places","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/532115\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego ferries Silvergate, Cabrillo join National Register or Historic Places"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(FOX 5\/KUSI) \u2014 Two ferries that spent decades taking passengers between San Diego and Coronado, as well as on tours around the San Diego Bay, have been added to the National Register of Historic Places. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flagshipsd.com\/flagship-fleet\/silvergate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Silvergate<\/a>, built in 1940, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flagshipsd.com\/flagship-fleet\/cabrillo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cabrillo<\/a>, built in 1964, earned recognition from the U.S. Department of the Interior for their maritime significance, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flagshipsd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Flagship Cruises &amp; Events<\/a>, which operates the ferries.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_swiper-wrapper swiper-wrapper\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_slide swiper-slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Silvergate Ferry on San Diego Bay\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_image wp-image-2633970\" data-id=\"2633970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Silvergate-ferry.jpg\"  \/>Silvergate Ferry<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_slide swiper-slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Cabrillo Ferry in San Diego Bay\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_image wp-image-2633969\" data-id=\"2633969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Cabrillo-ferry.jpg\"  \/>Cabrillo Ferry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-prev swiper-button-prev swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"\/><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-next swiper-button-next swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"\/><a aria-label=\"Pause Slideshow\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-pause\" role=\"button\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Both ferries are still operating and can be seen docked between Broadway Pier and Navy Pier or providing tours around the bay.<\/p>\n<p>Flagship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1202798625332834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">posted a video on social media<\/a> showing a plaque being added to the Cabrillo to mark the designation. <\/p>\n<p>The Silvergate was first built to ferry passengers between San Diego and Coronado until the Coronado Bridge was built in 1969, where it was then used for harbor excursions and education programs. It resumed ferry service in 1987. <\/p>\n<p>It measures 65 feet, accommodates up to 219 guests and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flagshipsd.com\/flagship-fleet\/silvergate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">named after an earlier ferry<\/a> built in 1888.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of the Interior bestowed the historic designation due to its significance in maritime transportation during World War II and for San Diego recreation. <\/p>\n<p>The Cabrillo was built specifically for passenger service and is being recognized in part for its association with its designer and builder, Oakley J.
