PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — It’s looking more likely that there will be a significant snowstorm in the Philadelphia region this weekend<\/a>, and now it appears we may have an icy mix as well.<\/p>\n

Latest track and timing of snowstorm in the Philadelphia region<\/p>\n

A system will be moving toward the East Coast from the southwest, and snow looks to arrive late Saturday night.<\/p>\n

The latest models show the storm moving north, which means some parts of the area may see an icy mix.<\/p>\n

Any such mixing will impact snowfall totals.<\/p>\n

While it’s still too soon to predict exactly how much snow we’ll see, a heavy snow event is looking likely.<\/p>\n

The snow is expected to last throughout the day Sunday and perhaps even into early Monday.<\/p>\n

We will continue to monitor this system<\/a> over the next few days to see how it develops.<\/p>\n

Either way, it will be a brutally cold weekend with highs in the teens to near 20.<\/p>\n

Timing of potential weekend snowstorm in the Philadelphia region<\/p>\n

Because the system is still several days away, it’s still unknown exactly when it will hit, but models are starting to show snow arriving overnight Saturday into early Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

The cold weather will continue into the following week<\/a>, leaving little chance for any snow we get this weekend to melt.<\/p>\n

‘Catastrophic’ ice storm possible from Texas to the Carolinas<\/p>\n

The storm could coat roads, trees and power lines with devastating ice across a wide expanse of the South<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The storm arriving late this week and into the weekend is shaping up to be a “widespread potentially catastrophic event from Texas to the Carolinas,” said Ryan Maue, a former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know how people are going to deal with it,” he said.<\/p>\n

Forecasters warned that the ice could weigh down trees and power lines, triggering widespread outages.<\/p>\n

“If you get a half of an inch of ice – or heaven forbid an inch of ice – that could be catastrophic,” said Keith Avery, CEO of the Newberry Electric Cooperative in South Carolina.<\/p>\n

People in Philadelphia region stock up on snow supplies<\/p>\n

With heavy snow in the forecast, people are heading to the stores to get supplies.<\/p>\n

That includes Killian’s Hardware in Chestnut Hill.<\/p>\n

“They are stocking up on ice, melting compounds, and shovels, and sleds,” said shop owner Russell Goudy.<\/p>\n

Shops that sell snow supplies were getting busier Wednesday ahead of a weekend snowstorm in the Philadelphia region.<\/p>\n

He said his inventory on Wednesday is probably as good as it will be for the rest of the week.<\/p>\n

“We just got a big delivery in this morning. We expect, though, that it probably is going to sell out within the next day or two,” Goudy said.<\/p>\n

So, if you need ice-melting material, you would be wise to make a move sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n

Especially if you are a conscientious pet owner.<\/p>\n

“We are trying to sell more pet-friendly ice melters, but they’re getting harder to get now,” Goudy said. “So, you might have to revert to the old rock salt.”<\/p>\n
