A four-alarm inferno ripped through a Brooklyn warehouse Wednesday afternoon \u2013 leaving \u201cextensive damage\u201d and ravaging at least 25 businesses that stored their wares there, the FDNY said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The blaze broke out around 12:40 p.m. inside the Red Hook facility on Columbia Street that stores refrigeration material, food, household items and manufacturing products, according to the department.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cUpon arrival, the fire was blowing out the roofs in multiple areas, and [it reached] a second alarm very quickly,\u201d FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The FDNY said a fire that broke out across a Brooklyn warehouse led to \u201cextensive damage.\u201d<\/p>\n
The blaze, which initially only impacted three storage bays, continued raging until it reached four alarms, drawing more than 200 firefighters to the scene, fire officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOur engine companies moved in very aggressively, very deliberately,\u201d FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods told reporters. \u201cThey prevented further extensions within this building.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The flames left the roof of the building with \u201cextensive damage,\u201d according to Woods.<\/p>\n
The bitter cold and blustery wind gusts posed an additional challenge, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe weather was definitely a factor,\u201d Woods said. <\/p>\n
The blaze occurred inside the Red Hook facility at approximately 12:40 p.m. FDNY<\/p>\n
\u201cThe wind was carrying the embers throughout this building and catching fire to multiple other bays.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very dangerous job,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very physically demanding job, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than 200 firefighters responded to the call to put out the fire. CBS New York<\/p>\n
No one was hurt, but Woods suspects that 25 businesses were impacted, as the facility is home to 25 storage bays. <\/p>\n
Bonsignore commended the firefighters on scene for \u201can outstanding job of putting this fire out.\u201d<\/p>\n
The fire erupted steps from the Erie Basin Auto Pound \u2013 the NYPD\u2019s massive auto pound which stores DNA evidence and vehicles suspected of being used in crimes \u2013 which was engulfed in flames in both 2022 <\/a>and 2024<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The facility was untouched by the fire this time, cops said.<\/p>\n
