Don Lyman for The Boston Globe, File\t<\/p>\n<p>Attleboro officials issued a warning to city residents on Wednesday, warning that a rare venomous snake has been spotted in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The snake, believed to be a copperhead, was reported along the Ten Mile River near Milk Street, city officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CityofAttleboro\/posts\/1165027079005185\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>. The snake is reported to have bitten two dogs, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease be cautious when walking or running in this area, and keep your dogs close,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, the copperhead, while found from southern New England to Illinois and south to Georgia, is listed as an endangered species in the Bay State. Generally, they have only been found in the southern Connecticut River Valley and the Boston area, according to the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe copperhead is one of Massachusetts\u2019 most mysterious and rare snakes,\u201d state wildlife officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/info-details\/copperhead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">wrote online<\/a>. \u201cVery few people will ever encounter a copperhead in Massachusetts by accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts copperheads have triangular, reddish-brown heads and reddish crossbands against a tan or beige background. The vipers also have vertical or cat-like pupils.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/info-details\/learn-about-copperheads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">According to state officials<\/a>, copperheads are \u201crarely\u201d aggressive toward people, but if they are threatened they can \u201cmove quickly, vibrate their tail rapidly, and strike repeatedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost copperhead bites occur when people step on or touch one accidentally,\u201d officials wrote. \u201cBites require immediate medical attention.
