Opal Lee<\/a>\u00a0has spent a lifetime walking for freedom \u2014 literally. At 89, she trekked hundreds of miles from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., each\u00a02\u00bd-mile segment<\/a>\u00a0representing the two-and-a-half years it took for news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Galveston. That march helped secure a place in history: Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. Now, nearly a decade later, her legacy is being celebrated in a very different way \u2014 through a Barbie doll that captures the spirit of her lifelong activism.<\/p>\n

Lee is now part of Mattel\u2019s Barbie Signature Inspiring Women series, which celebrates real-life figures whose courage and perseverance have shaped history and inspired future generations. The Opal Lee doll wears a blue Opal\u2019s Walk for Freedom T-shirt, white pants, sneakers, and glasses atop her gray curls, standing with a hand on her hip as if poised to keep moving. On the box, one of Lee\u2019s favorite quotes is featured: \u201cIf people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love.\u201d According to\u00a0the Dallas Morning News<\/a>, her granddaughter Dione Sims said Lee \u201cscreamed in delight\u201d when she first saw the doll and \u201ccouldn\u2019t believe it.\u201d With this release, Lee joins trailblazers like Jane Goodall, Venus Williams, Ellen Ochoa, and Maya Angelou in Mattel\u2019s Inspiring Women series.<\/p>\n

Over her 99 years, Lee has accumulated a remarkable record of honors. She has received the\u00a0Presidential Medal of Freedom<\/a>, been\u00a0nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and earned more than half a dozen honorary doctorates \u2014 yet she remains focused on what matters most: inspiring change, empowering communities, and keeping the memory of Juneteenth alive.<\/p>\n

Lee\u2019s commitment to civil rights began early. When she was 12, a mob of white supremacists burned down her family\u2019s Fort Worth home on June 19, 1939 \u2014 Juneteenth, the day commemorating the 1865 announcement that enslaved people in Texas were free. That formative experience embedded a deep understanding of freedom\u2019s fragility and propelled her toward a career as a teacher, counselor, and community activist.<\/p>\n

Her 2016 walk was more than symbolic. Lee petitioned lawmakers to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday, and five years later, she saw that dream come true. Today, she continues the tradition with her annual 2.5-mile Opal\u2019s Walk for Freedom events, showing that activism is a lifelong pursuit and that every voice can make a difference.<\/p>\n
