And yet, in sharp contrast to the gathering\u2019s past as a neutral space for global cooperation, the WEF became a battleground. Leaders like Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron took shots at each other; high-powered political dinners reportedly descended into heckling<\/a> and walkouts<\/a>; and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called time of death<\/a> on the <\/strong>rules-based order.<\/p>\n

The mountain comes down to earth<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the largest gathering of global leadership of the post-COVID era,\u201d Larry Fink, CEO of global asset management giant BlackRock, told the assembled delegates<\/a> at the launch of the event. \u201cBut now for the harder question: Will anyone outside this room care?\u201d<\/p>\n

Fink \u2014 who was brought in to shore up the WEF after the chaotic departure of its founder Klaus Schwab \u2014 had succeeded in bringing star power to Davos, from Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to business tycoons who usually steer clear of the event, like Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Tesla\u2019s Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

Yet even as he succeeded in putting the WEF firmly on the global news agenda, Fink worried about the event\u2019s connection to real people. He told the Forum that, \u201cIf we\u2019re being honest, for many people this meeting feels out of step with the moment: elites in an age of populism, an established institution in an era of deep institutional distrust.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hit out at the WEF\u2019s previous years of \u201cutopian consensus\u201d and \u201ckumbaya\u201d in an interview<\/a> with POLITICO\u2019S Dasha Burns for \u201cThe Conversation\u201d podcast. \u201cThe inmates were running the asylum at that point,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
