(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1973:<\/strong> President Richard Nixon addressed the nation about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/address-the-nation-announcing-conclusion-agreement-ending-the-war-and-restoring-peace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">end of the Vietnam War<\/a>. An agreement \u2014 known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.142wg.ang.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/3280544\/fifty-years-on-remembering-the-1973-paris-peace-accords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paris Peace Accords<\/a> \u2014 was drafted by the United States and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and would be signed days later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weather records <\/strong>(from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/climate?wfo=lot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High temperature: <strong>65 degrees<\/strong> (1909)<\/li>\n<li>Low temperature: <strong>Minus 18 degrees<\/strong> (1963)<\/li>\n<li>Precipitation: <strong>0.89 inches<\/strong> (1999)<\/li>\n<li>Snowfall: <strong>4.4 inches<\/strong> (1939)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-tomorrows-transit-car-i\/163249133\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State-of-the-Art Car<\/a> (SOAC), produced by the U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s Urban Mass Transportation Administration and Boeing Veritol, arrived in Chicago for a two-week demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-youre-in-for-a-new-kin\/163249208\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stainless steel<\/a> two-car system (one designed for 200 passengers and the other for 300) featured a plush interior design, carpeting and air conditioning (which probably wasn\u2019t an impressive feature given it was here during the winter). The system, however, was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-cta-tests-dream-trains\/163249156\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">too wide and too long<\/a> to run on most Chicago Transit Authority lines, so it could only operate on the Skokie Swift (today\u2019s Yellow Line). Engineers designed a retracting platform and other modifications to showcase SOAC\u2019s capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Two &quot;L&quot; cars, which designers thought embodied the epitome of the dream railcar, is shown here on Jan. 23, 1975.
