The actor, who played the superhero on Lois &amp; Clark: The New Adventures of Superman\u00a0from 1993 to 1997, said he is concerned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/james-gunn\/\" id=\"auto-tag_james-gunn\" data-tag=\"james-gunn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Gunn<\/a>\u2018s vision for the character. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHow woke is Hollywood going to make this character?\u201d he said in a video interview with TMZ. \u201cHow much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters [to] exist for the times? For Superman, it was \u2018truth, justice, and the American way.\u2019 Well, they dropped that\u2026 They came up with \u2018truth, justice, and a better tomorrow.\u2019 Changing beloved characters I don\u2019t think is a great idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe added, \u201cThe \u2018American way\u2019 is immigrant friendly, tremendously immigrant friendly. But there are rules. You can\u2019t come in saying, \u2018I want to get rid of all the rules in America, because I want it to be more like Somalia.\u2019 Well that doesn\u2019t work, because you had to leave Somalia to come here\u2026 There have to be limits, because we cant have everybody in the United States. We can\u2019t have everybody, society will fail. So there have to be limits.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGunn recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/james-gunn-maga-superman-immigration-1235380612\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the Sunday Times<\/a>, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/superman-review-james-gunn-dc-universe-1235374965\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Superman<\/a> is the story of America. An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.\u201d The interview resulted in a backlash from the far-right, anti-immigrant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/maga\/\" id=\"auto-tag_maga\" data-tag=\"maga\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MAGA<\/a> set, which apparently includes Cain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s being portrayed as a real negative thing that we want people to follow our immigration laws, which is insane to me,\u201d Cain said. \u201cI feel we are in a bad situation here now because it\u2019s being stoked by politicians and by NGOs that have a political agenda. And I think bringing Superman into it, I think that was a mistake by James Gunn to say it\u2019s an immigrant thing, and I think its going to hurt the numbers on the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCain added that initially he \u201cwas excited for the film\u201d because it seemed to have a sense of humor that previous Superman movies have lacked. <\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m rooting for it to be a success, but I don\u2019t like that last political comment,\u201d the actor said. \u201cAnd I saw Sean Gunn say something about it too, and I know Sean, I like Sean, it\u2019s his brother but I just don\u2019t know that it\u2019s going to be the right. It\u2019s not going to take it like Snow White, but I don\u2019t think its gonna help the numbers. People really need to be educated on this immigration situation because we are the most immigrant friendly country by far on this planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGunn and other members of the\u00a0Superman\u00a0cast were asked about the uproar at the\u00a0Superman\u00a0premiere in Hollywood Monday night, July 7. Gunn laughed off a question from a\u00a0Variety\u00a0reporter,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Variety\/status\/1942400214461211015\">saying<\/a>, \u201cI think this movie is for everyone. I don\u2019t have anything to say to anybody. I\u2019m not here to judge people. I think this is a movie about kindness, and I think that\u2019s something everyone can relate to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSean Gunn, the director\u2019s brother, who plays the villain Maxwell Lord, also got a chuckle out of the red carpet question, but did offer a more\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Variety\/status\/1942377004797682054\">blunt response<\/a>. \u201cMy reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about. We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants,\u201d he said. \u201cYes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants. And if you don\u2019t like that, you\u2019re not American. People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNathan Fillion, who plays Guy Gardner\/Green Lantern, gave the heartiest laugh and the quippiest response, saying, \u201cAw, somebody needs a hug. It\u2019s just a movie guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGunn\u2019s Superman, which stars David Corenswet, is in theaters July 11. Rolling Stone commended the film in a review, writing, \u201cIt\u2019s faint praise, even in the post-MCU era of the genre, to say that\u00a0Superman\u00a0is a solid superhero film; the caveat is hiding in plain sight. What Gunn has pulled off is something more complicated, more interesting, and far tougher: He\u2019s given us a Superman movie that actually feels like a living, breathing comic book.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dean Cain is not a fan of the direction Hollywood is taking Superman.
