In a show of sportsmanship, Spizzirri intervened, approaching the umpire and saying he hadn’t been ready to receive.

He had the crowd on his side, until Sinner’s movement became visibly wobbly.

Under the roof — with the glare gone, the temperature easing across the third and fourth sets and the radiated heat from the court plummeting — the momentum swung.

“I don’t know if he got saved by it,” Spizzirri said. “I smiled a little bit when the heat rule went into effect, just because it was kind of funny timing. But at the same time, the game at 2-1 in the third set was when it hit, I think it’s 5 (on the heat scale), which means that the heat rule is in effect. So whenever that game was over, whether I broke or whether he held, we were going to close the roof.”

___

More AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Limping and desperately trying to stretch out cramps in his arms and legs, Jannik…

[10
32349,62212,38341,101585,21485,10789,45920,2766,173191,32355,139597,3884,1824,21487,32350,117113,8650,107680,63957,238314,23024,113392,6991,6115,9125,236076,11061,229050,13158,235115,62,48763,185704,12335,1464,154939,67,132,68,151570,238315
post-539702","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-amanda-anisimova","tag-anna-kalinskaya","tag-australian-open","tag-australian-open-tennis-championships","tag-ben-shelton","tag-casper-ruud","tag-darren-cahill","tag-elena-rybakina","tag-eliot-spizzirri","tag-elise-mertens","tag-fergus-murphy","tag-heat-waves","tag-jannik-sinner","tag-jessica-pegula","tag-karen-khachanov","tag-karolina-pliskova","tag-linda-noskova","tag-lorenzo-musetti","tag-luciano-darderi","tag-maddison-inglis","tag-madison-keys","tag-margaret-court","tag-marin-cilic","tag-naomi-osaka","tag-novak-djokovic","tag-oksana-selekhmeteva","tag-peyton-stearns","tag-rod-laver","tag-roger-federer","tag-send-to-apple-news","tag-sports","tag-sports-retirements","tag-stanislas-wawrinka","tag-taylor-fritz","tag-tennis","tag-tomas-machac","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us","tag-valentin-vacherot","tag-xin-yu-wang
["GET
