{"id":54071,"date":"2025-07-10T12:16:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/54071\/"},"modified":"2025-07-10T12:16:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:16:11","slug":"mining-firms-power-uk-stocks-to-record-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/54071\/","title":{"rendered":"Mining firms power UK stocks to record high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The smelting area, where the copper is smelted and then placed in molds and cooled, at the Codelco El Teniente processing facility in Machali, Chile, on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>London-listed mining firms bounced on Thursday, shaking off recent losses to drive the U.K.&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FTSE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FTSE 100<\/a> index to a record high as investors assessed the impact of 50% U.S. copper tariffs and stronger Chinese economic data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAL-GB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anglo American<\/a> shares were 5% higher at midday in London, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/RIO-GB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio Tinto<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GLEN-GB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glencore<\/a> both up 4.5% and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ANTO-GB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antofagasta<\/a> up 3%.<\/p>\n<p>The gains come amid turbulence in the copper market, where prices are at a record high and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/us-copper-price-premium-economic-consequences.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">premium paid by U.S. buyers<\/a> over those in the rest of the world is soaring, following this week&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/trump-says-50percent-tariff-on-copper-will-begin-aug-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unexpected announcement that<\/a> 50% U.S. duties will be introduced on Aug. 1 \u2014 at the top end of expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Stock Chart IconStock chart icon<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Anglo American share price.<\/p>\n<p>The news is mixed for the mining giants, which have large operations in key U.S. copper export locations such as Chile, with uncertainty over supply and demand dynamics massively elevated. A broad price spike may be beneficial to producers in the short-term, according to Hargreaves Lansdown&#8217;s head of money and markets, Susannah Streeter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the main beneficiaries of higher U.S. copper prices are its major domestic mining companies which sell on Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) pricing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/two-stocks-that-benefit-most-from-trump-copper-tariffs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to analysts<\/a>, which are set to see higher realized revenues.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. imports just under half its copper, and is widely considered unlikely to be able to ramp up production enough to significantly alter that mix in the short-term, putting continued pressure on prices.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"flourish-credit\" href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/24176329\/?utm_source=embed&amp;utm_campaign=visualisation\/24176329\" target=\"_top\" style=\"text-decoration:none!important\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Made with Flourish\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/made_with_flourish.svg\" style=\"width:105px!important;height:16px!important;border:none!important;margin:0!important;\"\/> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has been a rough year so far for Europe-listed mining firms, which saw the worst performance among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.STOXX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stoxx 600<\/a> sectors in the first half, even as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/17\/gold-outshines-treasurys-yen-and-swiss-franc-year-to-date.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commodities such as gold have rallied<\/a>. Shares have pulled back from their April lows, but firms including Rio Tinto are down in the year-to-date as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/rio-tintos-first-quarter-iron-ore-shipments-fall-9-2025-04-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poor weather disrupted operations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The companies are meanwhile sensitive to expectations for global growth, which have been dented this year by U.S. tariff uncertainty, along with economic signals from resource-hungry China.<\/p>\n<p>Maurizio Carulli, global energy and mining analyst at Quilter Cheviot, told CNBC on Thursday that mining gains were being supported by data showing a rise in Chinese construction machinery sales, a key indicator for the Chinese economy.<\/p>\n<p>News on Wednesday that some members of the U.S. Federal Reserve&#8217;s voting committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/09\/most-fed-officials-see-rate-cuts-coming-but-opinions-vary-widely-on-how-many-minutes-show.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expect interest rate cuts to be appropriate later this year<\/a> is also positive for the sector, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Stock Chart IconStock chart icon<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FTSE 100.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Finally, there has been somewhat of a technical rebound after the [mining] sector showed a bit of weakness yesterday,&#8221; Carulli added.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell, flagged wider market talk of a &#8220;potential new wave of government stimulus in China,&#8221; with any support for its giant property sector leading to greater commodities demand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Second is a weaker dollar, as that makes dollar-denominated commodities cheaper to buy with other currencies,&#8221; Coatsworth told CNBC.
