Logie, a chest specialist, confirmed former Chicago gang leader Al Capone had developed pneumonia on Jan. 24, 1947. &quot;I doubt very seriously if there is a chance for recovery. It is impossible to say how long he will last,&quot; Logie told reporters. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1947:<\/strong> Former Chicago Outfit boss Al Capone <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-al-capone-dead-heart-fa\/163623245\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died<\/a> in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Syphilis-related complications earned Capone an early release from prison in 1939, after he served seven years\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/history\/famous-cases\/al-capone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/history\/famous-cases\/al-capone\">for tax evasion<\/a>. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984:<\/strong> Chicago police Officer <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-partners-stray-shot-kil\/164026773\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dorelle C. Brandon<\/a> \u2014 a six-year veteran of the department \u2014 became the first patrolwoman killed in the line of duty in the city. Osorio\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993:<\/strong> Sears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1993\/01\/26\/sears-closing-the-book-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed<\/a> its money-losing catalog division, which meant the demise of its storied Big Book. (Brian Cassella\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2022:<\/strong> The Chicago Bears hired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/01\/25\/the-chicago-bears-hire-ryan-poles-as-their-new-general-manager-next-up-finding-the-new-head-coach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Poles<\/a> as the team\u2019s new general manager.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/01\/25\/the-chicago-bears-hire-ryan-poles-as-their-new-general-manager-next-up-finding-the-new-head-coach\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/01\/25\/the-chicago-bears-hire-ryan-poles-as-their-new-general-manager-next-up-finding-the-new-head-coach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">taking over as GM<\/a>, Poles spent the first year trading veteran players and shedding expensive contracts while amassing young talent. He executed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/03\/10\/chicago-bears-trade-the-no-1-pick-in-the-2023-nfl-draft-to-the-carolina-panthers-heres-what-they-got-in-return\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/03\/10\/chicago-bears-trade-the-no-1-pick-in-the-2023-nfl-draft-to-the-carolina-panthers-heres-what-they-got-in-return\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a blockbuster trade<\/a>\u00a0for the No. 1 draft pick in 2023, a deal that \u2014 with some help from a woeful 2023 Carolina Panthers team \u2014 eventually landed the Bears quarterback Caleb Williams\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/04\/25\/chicago-bears-pick-caleb-williams-nfl-draft\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/04\/25\/chicago-bears-pick-caleb-williams-nfl-draft\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with the No. 1 pick<\/a>\u00a0a year later.
