{"id":542477,"date":"2026-01-25T19:50:21","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T19:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/542477\/"},"modified":"2026-01-25T19:50:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T19:50:21","slug":"freezing-weather-hits-houston-area-houston-public-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/542477\/","title":{"rendered":"Freezing weather hits Houston area \u2013 Houston Public Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/?attachment_id=541588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-541588\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Media-3-1000x563.jpg\" alt=\"Icy Trees Jogger in Cypress\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"   data-eio=\"p\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scott Flannigan\/Houston Public Media<\/p>\n<p>Someone jogs in Cypress, Texas, as ice covers trees and rooftops on the morning of Jan. 25, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Houston-area residents woke up to a cold, rainy, stormy and in some cases icy Sunday \u2013 with reports of thunder sleet in some locations \u2013 as temperatures plunged toward freezing and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/weather\/2026\/01\/24\/541554\/houston-braces-for-winter-storm-heres-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter storm warning<\/a> remained in effect.<\/p>\n<p>Freezing conditions were setting in north and west of the city, where there were reports of freezing rain and sleet as well as slick roadways, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/hgx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service<\/a> meteorologist Jason Davis. He said there had been &#8220;quite a bit of lightning&#8221; reported, along with thunder sleet, a rare phenomenon in which a thunderstorm coincides with freezing precipitation.<\/p>\n<p>Rain fell across greater Houston early Sunday morning. Precipitation dissipated later in the day, but temperatures were dipping below freezing in northern parts of the metropolitan area.<\/p>\n<p>Sign up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/hellohouston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hello, Houston!<\/a> daily newsletter to get local reports like this delivered directly to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Mason, the city of Houston\u2019s emergency management director, said the city was &#8220;very, very fortunate&#8221; to avoid the ice accumulation seen further north \u2014 but, he added, &#8220;We\u2019re not done with this weather event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tonight, it is going to get very, very cold, so any moisture that\u2019s left out there &#8230; it is going to refreeze,&#8221; Mason said. &#8220;When the sun goes down, please make sure you\u2019re off the roads and take the burden off our first responders that will be out in the field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo echoed those sentiments early Sunday afternoon, saying there was less ice on local roadways than had been expected. But calls for service were picking up, she said, as more residents ventured out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you can be home, great. That would be the best thing to do,\u201d Hidalgo said. \u201cIf you have to go out, stay off the highways and stay off the bridges. That&#8217;s where we&#8217;re seeing this ice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hidalgo also said that while the region was in a \u201cgood and stable position\u201d in terms of electricity outages, \u201cI don&#8217;t want folks to get too comfortable. Things are going to change.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Power outages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than 1,600 homes and businesses in the Houston area were without electricity as of about 1 p.m. Sunday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/tracker.centerpointenergy.com\/map\/texas?location=eyJ2aWV3Ijp7ImxhdGl0dWRlIjoyOS41OTYsImxvbmdpdHVkZSI6LTk1LjUzNCwiem9vbSI6OCwiZXZlbnRJZCI6bnVsbH19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CenterPoint Energy\u2019s online outage tracker<\/a>. The utility company that serves much of the region had reported more than 8,400 customers without power several hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/weather\/2026\/01\/25\/541582\/houston-weather-winter-storm-freeze-power-outage\/attachment\/media-2-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-541585\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Media-2-563x1000.jpg\" alt=\"Ice on Branches\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\"   data-eio=\"p\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scott Flannigan\/Houston Public Media<\/p>\n<p>Ice can be seen on tree branches in Cypress, Texas, on Jan. 25, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Lock, CenterPoint\u2019s director of local government affairs, said Saturday that crews were stationed at two different sites ready to respond to power outages. Officials with the company warned that freezing rain was the biggest threat to local electricity infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/01\/24\/texas-winter-storm-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas winter storm updates: Sunday brings extreme cold and local power outages<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were concerned about the accumulation of ice on our power lines, the accumulation of ice on trees, that vegetation would fall on contact,\u201d Jesus Soto Jr., CenterPoint\u2019s executive vice president and chief operating officer, said during a 9 a.m. news conference. \u201cThat did not materialize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later Sunday, Lock said CenterPoint was shifting its focus \u201cfrom freezing rain to the hard freeze over the next two days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat could have an impact on some of our equipment,\u201d Lock added. <\/p>\n<p>If residents see any downed power lines, Soto said they should avoid contact with them and call 713-207-2222 to report them.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Brownell, CenterPoint&#8217;s vice president of resilience and capital delivery, said late Sunday morning that crews will be assessing the damage in neighborhoods with power outages. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it&#8217;s a minor damage, that truck could potentially fix that and get the customer back on,&#8221; Brownell said. &#8220;If it&#8217;s a larger damage, like a broken pole, that&#8217;s a bigger type of a crew and so they will follow that up. A crew immediately will start rolling there and we&#8217;ll begin the restoration process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There were several hundred additional outages Sunday in Montgomery County, north of Houston, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etrviewoutage.com\/map?state=TX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entergy&#8217;s online outage tracker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warming centers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/public-safety\/2026\/01\/23\/541483\/houston-warming-centers-winter-storm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Warming centers are open<\/a> across the Houston region \u2013 including in Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston and Montgomery counties \u2013 for residents who are without power or need to escape the cold.<\/p>\n<p>According to Houston Mayor John Whitmire, the city&#8217;s 12 warming centers sheltered 940 people overnight. The city-operated centers will remain open through midday Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/energy-environment\/animals\/2026\/01\/23\/541535\/houston-spca-urges-residents-to-keep-pets-inside-during-upcoming-winter-storm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston SPCA urges residents to keep pets inside during winter storm<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>City officials reported before the freeze that three of the 12 centers lacked backup power, but Whitmire said Sunday that CenterPoint supplied them with mobile generators.<\/p>\n<p>Hidalgo said the warming centers operated by Harris County were at about 60% capacity as of early Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Road conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>City and county officials reported no weather-related traffic deaths as of early Sunday afternoon. The preparation is working \u2014 but let me emphasize we cannot let our guard down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the 9 a.m. news conference, crews with the city&#8217;s public works department were responding to a 12-inch water main break on Chimney Rock Road. Department director Randy Macchi said the situation was &#8220;not something that we weren\u2019t prepared for or unable to respond to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Local elected officials in Houston and across the region have urged residents to avoid roadways if possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/transportation\/2026\/01\/23\/541460\/winter-storm-houston-roads-txdot-public-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transportation crews are treating Houston-area roadways ahead of winter weather<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The toll lanes on State Highway 288 were closed between downtown Houston and the Harris and Brazoria County line to the south, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TxDOTHouston\/status\/2015215501710889278\">Texas Department of Transportation&#8217;s Houston office<\/a>. The main lanes remained open.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/weather\/2026\/01\/25\/541582\/houston-weather-winter-storm-freeze-power-outage\/attachment\/winterstormcrash290hcso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-541603\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WinterStormCrash290HCSO-1000x490.jpg\" alt=\"Truck Crash 290\" width=\"1000\" height=\"490\"   data-eio=\"p\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Harris County Sheriff&#8217;s Office via X<\/p>\n<p>A pickup truck is connected to a tow truck on US 290 near its intersection with Telge Road on Jan. 25, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HCSOTexas\">Harris County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a> reported icy road conditions at several locations in the Cypress and Conroe areas, along with the flyovers at the intersection of Interstate 10 and the Grand Parkway in Katy.<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough said the Woodlands Parkway overpass at Interstate 45 was closed because of icy conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany reports of icing beginning on other overpasses and bridges,\u201d Keough wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/countyjudgekeough\/posts\/pfbid0ZP2aCjRahQi5pJM5VGDvUofK99uty8vDCvoUYHANmr9oEZK4kA1RYfGjpsEc1grel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook post<\/a>. \u201cTemperatures have dropped a few degrees since day break and we will remain below freezing today ahead of tonight&#8217;s significant drop in temperatures. Please stay off the roads if you can.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>TxDOT advised motorists to monitor road conditions at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstontranstar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston TranStar website.<\/a> Statewide road conditions can be monitored at <a href=\"https:\/\/drivetexas.org\/?ch=C&amp;fh=C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DriveTexas.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFreezing temperatures can quickly make roads unsafe \u2014 especially bridges and overpasses,\u201d TxDOT\u2019s Houston office said in a statement Sunday. \u201cStaying home is the safest choice. If you must drive, slow down and use extreme caution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polling locations closed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The winter weather also is impacting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/voting\/2026\/01\/25\/541594\/early-voting-houston-winter-storm-18th-congressional-district-runoff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special election runoff<\/a> in the 18th Congressional District, where former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards and former Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee are vying to complete the term of late U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner. So conditions aren&#8217;t really expected to improve much during the day today. Residents should make sure they have batteries in their smoke detectors and talk to family members about exit routes from their homes in case of an emergency, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafety and preparedness is about getting through this event,\u2019 Christensen said. \u201cWe are well skilled at this in Harris County. We can\u2019t say enough about our residents and the preparation that we make.
