{"id":5430,"date":"2025-06-22T14:38:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-22T14:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/5430\/"},"modified":"2025-06-22T14:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-22T14:38:08","slug":"riki-rachtman-icon-of-mtvs-headbangers-ball-loves-fame-studios-and-muscle-shoals-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/5430\/","title":{"rendered":"Riki Rachtman, icon of MTV&#8217;s &#8216;Headbangers Ball,&#8217; loves FAME Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"REFGCLBDYNCANE2LGBXCBL3QQE\">Riki Rachtman knows what music history feels, looks and sounds like because he\u2019s been in it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V6IFN6LOHRC27AOO4ZOILHHIKA\">In 1980s Hollywood, California, he and roommate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2019\/07\/an-80s-glam-metal-survivor-tells-all.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Taime Downe, frontman of now-iconic glam-rockers Faster Pussycat<\/a>, cofounded the club Cathouse. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P73UKSQ6WRAQDHAQ34HXLCLMPA\">The Cathouse was both a decadent playground for rock stars (and those in their orbit or wanting to be), and a music venue. Cathouse hosted shows by quintessential Los Angeles rock groups like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2024\/05\/slash-talks-new-album-and-tour-southern-rock-appetite-for-destruction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Guns N\u2019 Roses<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2025\/04\/legendary-guitarist-on-bands-surprising-resurgence-we-have-a-second-career.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">L.A. Guns<\/a>, as well as up-and-coming out-of-town rockers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/topic\/Black%20Crowes\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Black Crowes<\/a> and Pearl Jam. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WJOSHE7S3JHL7JL32RNGEJ2MO4\">Rachtman later became the host of popular MTV show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laweekly.com\/the-10-most-outrageous-moments-from-mtvs-headbangers-ball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cHeadbangers Ball.\u201d<\/a> It didn\u2019t hurt his chances when he showed up for his audition with GN\u2019R singer Axl Rose in tow. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ESUSWD5RSFE45O7RUUQ3BJO4RY\">As Rachtman told me in our 2016 interview for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laweekly.com\/happy-30th-anniversary-to-the-cathouse-hollywoods-most-decadent-rock-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LA Weekly retrospective on the Cathouse,<\/a> \u201c[Axl] was a really, really big part of me getting the [MTV] job.\u201d But, he added, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have met Axl if it wasn\u2019t for Cathouse.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7VKBR6GPW5EW7OWF4BEOOMDGRQ\">On \u201cHeadbangers Ball,\u201d Rachtman did everything from introing the latest M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce and Metallica videos to skydiving with Megadeth\u2019s Dave Mustaine to interviewing a dress-wearing Kurt Cobain of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2020\/12\/nirvana-on-a-school-night-when-grunge-invaded-birmingham-27-years-ago.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nirvana<\/a> to going to a New Jersey waterpark with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/topic\/Alice%20in%20Chains\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alice in Chains<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7D5AGLB76JDS7APO4JCAMRG5NA\">Last week, Rachtman experienced a different chapter of music history in Alabama. His annual fundraising cross-country motorcycle ride, Riki\u2019s Ride, brought him to Muscle Shoals. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NB2W67JJMBC4VAUIAHMC2NR5CY\">Muscle Shoals is the north Alabama area famous for being a \u201860s and \u201870s recording epicenter for classic tracks by artists ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/entertainment\/2018\/08\/aretha_franklin_died.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/entertainment\/2018\/08\/aretha_franklin_died.html\">Aretha Franklin<\/a> and Etta James to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2024\/10\/the-story-behind-rolling-stones-drummers-epic-muscle-shoals-tribute-concert.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2024\/10\/the-story-behind-rolling-stones-drummers-epic-muscle-shoals-tribute-concert.html\">Rolling Stones<\/a> and Staple Singers. \u201cThis place is rock and roll holy land,\u201d Rachtman wrote on social media. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IMHA7VH6D5G4FIMRFYYUOW5ATY\">During a 13,000-mile ride from Key West, Florida to Glacier View, Alaska, Rachtman is raising money for the <a href=\"https:\/\/988lifeline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline<\/a>, via his Heavy Mental Foundation. All funds go to that, and you can donate via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lostramblers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lostramblers.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WOW573SQ75AEVIQE2Q63SZC4IM\">Riding a Harley-Davidson with wife Lea Vendetta, known for her work on reality show \u201cInk Masters,\u201d Rachtman is almost $10,000 toward a $30,000 goal for this year\u2019s Riki\u2019s Ride, which started June 7. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6DSHJZORONBCXARCX6X3UEUHI4\">Post Shoals, the fundraising ride has taken them to Southern music must-dos like New Orleans and Austin, Texas, through rain and heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DNM5ODPVTRG5JHXPLQQMKRHQVU\">Previous Riki\u2019s Rides have raised more than $50,000, according to Rachtman, and have included guests like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/guns-n-roses-under-appreciated-the-spaghetti-incident-and-live-era-87-93-re-examined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cUse Your Illusion\u201d era GN\u2019R guitarist Gilby Clarke<\/a> and The Cult guitarist Billy Duffy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XQLCJ4N5HVBG5LO7OL2Q3D3ZUQ\">Rachtman and Vendetta rode around 300 miles to get to Muscle Shoals, from North Carolina, where Rachtman has resided from for years and has worked as NASCAR on-air talent, to Tennessee to Georgia to Tennessee again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZYVMFAQIDZHHBEV6SDKGXXTGBA\">On June 10, Rachtman visited FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals. He posted on social media, \u201cThe music that came from Muscle Shoals, watch th<a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2023\/04\/how-muscle-shoals-documentary-changed-muscle-shoals-musics-future.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">e doc<\/a> if you never saw it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CNVPHJBBKNE25GGJQ7QST6EKWM\">In his post, Rachtman also mused on classic recordings at FAME by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2020\/05\/little-richards-deep-slightly-complicated-alabama-roots.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Little Richard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life-and-culture\/erry-2018\/08\/79248894759093\/the-story-behind-starstudded-n.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more recent tracking<\/a> by Aerosmith singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/entertainment\/2018\/07\/steven_tyler_fame_studios_musc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Steven Tyler<\/a>. He added, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2019\/08\/duane-allman-guitar-with-alabama-roots-sells-for-125-million.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Duane Allman<\/a> slept in the parking lot before he rose to fame.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GKTF6XSSUJFTTP6YAORIYQ73KE\">That same day, Rachtman stopped by Muscle Shoals fried chicken spot Champy\u2019s, where he met with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=10227659310578097&amp;set=a.1254126443069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fans<\/a>. <b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PLKHIK5V2NHLTEBOXBZY2AYQNE\">Next, Rachtman stopped by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/erry-2018\/03\/7b9864f437\/new_era_of_recording_begins_at.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Muscle Shoals Sound<\/a>, the legendary recording studio in Sheffield founded by FAME expatriate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/entertainment\/2016\/12\/muscle_shoals_has_got_the_swam.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studio musicians the Swampers<\/a> and stars like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/life\/2023\/07\/lana-del-rey-records-at-muscle-shoals-studio-before-leaving-alabama.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lana Del Rey<\/a> have recorded in recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AIVKPGWPCBHIJAVS7K5A23EQ6M\">\u201cIn this bathroom Keith Richards,\u201d Rachtman posted online, \u201cworked on the final details of [classic Stones ballad] \u2018Wild Horses\u2019 recorded the song and [Stones hit] \u2018Brown Sugar\u2019 in the studio where this bathroom is.
