\nhazardous conditions across the entire Mid-South region. Although
\nprecipitation has ended, the danger has not passed…<\/p>\n
HAZARDOUS ROADWAYS AND BLACK ICE:
\nRoads across the region remain covered in snow, sleet, and solid
\nice. Travel on secondary roads is virtually impossible in many
\nlocations.<\/p>\n
Even where main thoroughfares have been treated, motorists should
\nexercise extreme caution. Any slush or partial melting that
\noccurred during the day will rapidly refreeze as temperatures
\ndrop after sunset. This will result in the formation of
\nwidespread “black ice”-a transparent coating of ice that is
\nnearly invisible to drivers but extremely slippery.<\/p>\n
PLEASE AVOID ALL NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL. If you must drive, keep a
\nflashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an
\nemergency.<\/p>\n
EXTREME COLD AND POWER OUTAGES:
\nTemperatures are expected to remain well below freezing for the
\nforeseeable future. With power outages reported in several
\ncounties, staying warm safely is a priority.<\/p>\n
RECOMMENDED SAFETY ACTIONS:<\/p>\n
– –HEAT SAFETY:– If your power is out, NEVER use gas grills,
\ncharcoal grills, or camping stoves indoors. These produce deadly
\nCarbon Monoxide gas which you cannot smell or see. Generators
\nshould be operated outdoors only, at least 20 feet away from
\nwindows and doors.<\/p>\n
– –CONSERVE HEAT:– Keep doors and windows closed. Close
\ncurtains and blinds to trap heat inside. Stuff towels or rags in
\ncracks under doors. Close off unused rooms to avoid wasting heat.<\/p>\n
– –LAYER CLOTHING:– Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, warm
\nclothing in several layers rather than a single heavy layer. Wear
\na hat and mittens to prevent body heat loss.<\/p>\n
– –CHECK YOUR PIPES:– In homes without heat, open cabinet doors
\nbeneath kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow warmer air to
\ncirculate around pipes. Allow faucets to drip to prevent
\nfreezing.<\/p>\n
– –LOOK OUT FOR OTHERS:– Check on elderly neighbors, friends,
\nand family to ensure they are safe and warm, especially if they
