{"id":544400,"date":"2026-01-26T16:09:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T16:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/544400\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T16:09:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T16:09:14","slug":"microbes-in-space-mutated-and-developed-a-remarkable-ability-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/544400\/","title":{"rendered":"Microbes in Space Mutated And Developed a Remarkable Ability : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A box full of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/virus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73053\" data-postid=\"189595\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">viruses<\/a> and bacteria has completed its return trip to the International Space Station, and the changes these &#8216;bugs&#8217; experienced in their travels could help us Earthlings tackle drug-resistant infections.<\/p>\n<p>A team of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and US biotech company Rhodium Scientific Inc. pitted <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Escherichia_coli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Escherichia coli<\/a> bacteria against its viral arch-nemesis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/T7_phage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T7 bacteriophage<\/a>. This pair has been locked in an evolutionary &#8216;arms race&#8217; for as long as we&#8217;ve been looking, but never in microgravity \u2013 until they were sent to the ISS in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-iss-has-a-hygiene-problem-but-its-not-what-youd-think\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The ISS Has a Hygiene Problem, But It&#8217;s Not What You&#8217;d Think<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scientists aboard the space station incubated different combinations of bacteria and phages for 25 days, while the research team led by biochemist Vatsan Raman carried out the same experiments in Madison, down here on Earth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1769443752_961_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Space fundamentally changes how <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bacteriophage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phages<\/a> and bacteria interact: infection is slowed, and both organisms evolve along a different trajectory than they do on Earth,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scimex.org\/newsfeed\/bacteria-vs-phages-an-altered-evolutionary-arms-race-in-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the weightlessness of space, bacteria acquired mutations in genes involved in the microbe&#8217;s stress response and nutrient management. Their surface proteins also changed.
