{"id":545771,"date":"2026-01-27T01:53:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T01:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/545771\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T01:53:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T01:53:20","slug":"drivers-warned-they-may-need-to-avoid-driving-if-using-these-common-medications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/545771\/","title":{"rendered":"Drivers warned they may need to &#8216;avoid driving&#8217; if using these common medications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Insurance experts warn that drivers taking common medications including painkillers and antidepressants may be told to avoid driving<a class=\"AuthorLink_author-link__rg5qj\" data-tmdatatrack=\"author\" data-testid=\"byline-author\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/authors\/sam-dimmer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Sam Dimmer<\/strong><\/a> East Midlands Head of Brand and <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35 __className_d4ae89\">Luke Chillingsworth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>06:27, 26 Jan 2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0_Frustrated-Japanese-woman-sitting-in-her-car-during-a-traffic-jam.jpg\" alt=\"Frustrated Japanese woman sitting in her car during a traffic jam.\" loading=\"eager\"  \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Road users could become drowsy behind the wheel if using certain drugs\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Road users could become drowsy behind the wheel if using certain drugs(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The DVLA may advise drivers to &#8220;avoid driving&#8221; if they&#8217;re frequently taking certain <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/all-about\/motoring\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">common medicines<\/a>, according to industry specialists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Greg Wilson, founder of car insurance experts at Quotezone.co.uk, cautioned that everyday over-the-counter treatments such as painkillers could pose issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Additionally, regular use of potent medications, including antidepressants, could place individuals at risk <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/all-about\/motoring\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">while operating a vehicle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Greg warned that in such situations, motorists are likely to be advised against driving, effectively preventing them from using the roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Greg acknowledged: &#8220;If you are on strong medications, it is likely that you will be recommended to avoid driving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Opioid painkillers, tranquillisers, and certain antidepressants are examples of medicines that can <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/all-about\/motoring\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">affect driving ability<\/a> &#8211; as well as those that cause drowsiness or say &#8216;do not operate heavy machinery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">GOV.UK has previously cautioned that prescription medicines can occasionally be equally hazardous as illegal substances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They encouraged motorists taking drugs such as amphetamine, for instance, dextroamphetamine or selegiline, to consult their GP before taking to the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Those prescribed clonazepam, diazepam, flunitrazepam and lorazepam may also face risks when driving. Officials have additionally highlighted medications such as methadone, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/cars\/2159624\/dvla-ban-common-medications\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">the Express<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Morphine, codeine, tramadol, fentanyl, oxazepam or temazepam are also of concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">GOV.UK clarified: &#8220;It&#8217;s illegal in England, Scotland and Wales to drive with legal drugs in your body if it <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nottinghampost.com\/all-about\/motoring\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">impairs your driving<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s an offence to drive if you have over the specified limits of certain drugs in your blood and you have not been prescribed them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The AA has previously advised motorists to never cease taking their medication, whether prescribed or over-the-counter.
