{"id":546253,"date":"2026-01-27T06:46:21","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T06:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/546253\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T06:46:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T06:46:21","slug":"flash-flooding-on-copperfield-river-forces-emergency-evacuation-of-einasleigh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/546253\/","title":{"rendered":"Flash flooding on Copperfield River forces emergency evacuation of Einasleigh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Residents near the Copperfield River in Far North Queensland&#8217;s Gulf Country are being urged to evacuate now after the Etheridge Shire Council issued an emergency alert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The council said there was a flash flood Emergency Warning about the Copperfield Dam and Copperfield River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Residents around the Copperfield River and Einasleigh township must leave immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Gregory Developmental Road between Einasleigh and Gulf Developmental Road has been closed due to the flooding, according to QLDTraffic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Heavy rain also closed the Gilbert River Bridge between Croydon and Georgetown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mayor Barry Hughes said residents should quickly move to higher ground on the Einasleigh-Forsayth Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The latest report is that houses are now being threatened with inundation if not already inundated,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Partially flooded road and landscape\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/01ae3cf436a64f425f2ac78907b52545.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A Leave Immediately warning was issued for Einasleigh residents on Tuesday. (Supplied: Tayla Wellby, Einasleigh Hotel)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We already have some of the residents that have left town that are situated at a muster point in a safe zone on the outskirts of town.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Police say heavy rain has led to spilling of the Copperfield Dam, leading to &#8220;very dangerous&#8221; conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s over-topping the spillway over 6 metres, which is a massive amount of water,&#8221; Cr Hughes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We recorded rainfall of 250 millimetres in the catchment of the Copperfield River system overnight, which is contributing to the current height and the inflow of water that&#8217;s coming over that spillway.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said it was unknown when the flood would peak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re sitting in close proximity to the low that&#8217;s embedded in the monsoon trough and, with the ongoing heavy downpours that we&#8217;re experiencing right across the catchment of the Gilbert, the Robertson, Copperfield and Einasleigh river systems, we&#8217;re at the mercy of Mother Nature as we speak,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Community evacuates<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Chelsea Mosch at Jardine Station, north of Einasliegh, said she had never seen the water rise so quickly at the station before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s rising pretty quickly. (Supplied: Gilberton Outback Retreat)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Publican Tayla Wellby bought the Einasleigh Hotel on Friday, but had now evacuated her young family from the highest floodwaters in recent memory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said water had made it inside the pub and was still rising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Along with a handful of customers, she said they were watching the rising Copperfield River following heavy rains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I do believe upstream have had a lot more than we have, which is why we have got all the water,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It has risen pretty quickly from this morning.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said water levels were normal about 6:30am, but had covered the bridge by noon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The water is now lapping on the other side of Daintree Road outside.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Family outside an old pub.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/db9328cd620388cf8578d0221b00722f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tayla and Braydon Wellby, with their three children, Kensli, Hadley and Briggs took over ownership of the pub last week. (Supplied: Einasleigh Hotel)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Wellby said the former publican of 26 years told her he had never seen it so high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are ready to go at a moment&#8217;s notice.
