{"id":54699,"date":"2025-07-10T17:46:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T17:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/54699\/"},"modified":"2025-07-10T17:46:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T17:46:09","slug":"peak-energy-demand-record-set-by-aps-on-2025s-hottest-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/54699\/","title":{"rendered":"Peak energy demand record set by APS on 2025&#8217;s hottest day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX \u2013 Arizona Public Service, the state\u2019s largest electric provider, met a record level peak energy demand on Wednesday, which was the hottest day of 2025 in Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>Citing preliminary data, APS said customers used 8,527 megawatts of power between 5 and 6 p.m. during a day <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-weather-news\/daily-heat-record-hot-day\/5726639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phoenix\u2019s high temperature<\/a> was 118 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>It was the third consecutive year APS customers set a peak energy demand record, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-news\/arizona-utility-companies-set-records-for-energy-delivered-on-day-where-phoenix-hit-116-degrees\/5590044\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous high mark<\/a> of 8,210 megawatts on Aug. 24, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>How does APS keep up with increasing peak energy demand?<\/p>\n<p>The utility said it invests more than $2 billion annually in electrical system upgrades, operations and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>The APS record for peak energy demand has more than tripled since 1979, when the high mark was 2,579 megawatts for 387,000 homes and businesses. <\/p>\n<p>The company expects peak energy demand to reach more than 13,000 megawatts by 2038.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArizona is growing fast, and APS is building out the energy grid to keep pace. Our team monitors customer needs by the minute, plans decades ahead and covers everything in between,\u201d Brian Cole, APS vice president of resource management said in a press release Thursday, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.com\/en\/About\/Our-Company\/Newsroom\/Articles\/APS_Recognizes_Crews_Powering_Arizona_on_National_Lineworker_Appreciation_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Lineworker Appreciation Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom 24\/7 nuclear to flexible natural gas, coal, solar, wind, battery storage and our partnerships with customers \u2014 we\u2019re delivering reliable service with balanced resources at the lowest cost possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How many customers does Arizona Public Service serve?<\/p>\n<p>APS, which is owned by publicly traded Pinnacle West Capital Corp., provides electricity for about 1.4 million customers in 11 Arizona counties. The utility\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.com\/-\/media\/APS\/APSCOM-PDFs\/Residential\/Service-Plans\/Service-Territory-Map\/APS_Service_Territory_Map_2017_FL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">service area<\/a> includes a portion of Phoenix along with Valley suburbs to the west and north.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-business\/aps-rate-hike-2026\/5718128\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APS filed an application<\/a> with the Arizona Corporation Commission to raise rates by 14%.
