AP<\/p>\n<p>The crew warned that \u201cthe closure may last for several days.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>With temperatures <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/26\/us-news\/exceptionally-dangerous-temps-will-freeze-nyc-into-february\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remaining below freezing until February<\/a>, there\u2019s no telling when the ice accumulation may dissipate. <\/p>\n<p>By midday Tuesday, tugboats were dispatched ahead of ferries to clear the ice blocking their path.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, tugboats trailed ahead of the ferries to clear the ice covering the rivers. AP<\/p>\n<p>Riverkeeper Patrol Captain Luis Melendez, whose spent 16 years navigating the New York Harbor, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-ferry-service-suspension-ice-rivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">CBS News<\/a> that the new obstacles are making his usual trek along the brackish rivers even more nerve-wracking. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re moving people from place to place, and you\u2019re navigating through these kind of like ice patch and ice floes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ridetheferry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\"> New York Waterway<\/a> is also operating with delays and modified schedules. Service to and from Edgewater, New Jersey, was suspended outright on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>The five boroughs received <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/26\/us-news\/heres-how-much-snow-winter-storm-fern-dumped-on-nyc-with-more-on-the-way\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anywhere from 11 to 14 inches of snow<\/a> over the weekend, which practically paralyzed the city.
