{"id":54851,"date":"2025-07-10T19:06:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T19:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/54851\/"},"modified":"2025-07-10T19:06:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T19:06:12","slug":"mother-cabrinis-chicago-milestones-on-her-path-to-sainthood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/54851\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother Cabrini&#8217;s Chicago milestones on her path to sainthood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first American canonized by the Roman Catholic Church \u2014 just like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/05\/23\/pope-leo-xiv-chicago-robert-prevost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first American chosen as pope<\/a> \u2014 once walked among the people of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>The youngest of 13 children of Italian farmers, she dreamed of serving as a missionary. Her poor health, however, meant she was rejected by several orders. That\u2019s why Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini \u2014 who was born 175 years ago this month \u2014 founded her own, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mothercabrini.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIII encouraged Cabrini to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabrininationalshrine.org\/timeline-and-her-life-s-work#:~:text=Over%20the%20next%20years%2C%20Mother,expanding%20their%20missions%20throughout%20Italy.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expand her mission<\/a> to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>When she first arrived in America, Cabrini didn\u2019t speak English and was told by the archbishop of New York that her trip was a mistake. Yet Cabrini persisted and even became a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=556348660093213&amp;set=a.217865837274832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">naturalized citizen<\/a> in 1909.<\/p>\n<p>Before her death in Chicago at age 67, Cabrini founded 67 schools, orphanages, hospitals, convents and places of worship in North and South America. Her order has a presence today on six continents and Cabrini is revered by the faithful as patron saint of immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look back at Cabrini\u2019s Chicago milestones on her path to sainthood.<\/p>\n<p>Sept. 5, 1899<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Children pose in windows and above the door at Assumption School in Chicago, circa 1900. (University of Illinois at Chicago Collections)<\/p>\n<p>More than 500 students arrived for the first day of classes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/content\/dam\/city\/depts\/zlup\/Historic_Preservation\/Publications\/Assumption_School.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assumption School<\/a> (319 W. Erie St.), which was founded by Cabrini to educate the children of the Near North Side\u2019s Italian immigrant community. There was no cost to attend the school, which was operated by Cabrini\u2019s order as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assumption-chgo.org\/M-Page-G.asp?dseq=10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assumption Church<\/a>, the city\u2019s first Italian-American parish.<\/p>\n<p>The school closed in 1945, but the building was used by Gamma Photo Labs and then the International Cinema Museum. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-school-may-be-converted\/176271244\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">converted to condominiums<\/a> after receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps1.chicago.gov\/landmarksweb\/web\/landmarkdetails.htm?lanId=1245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">landmark status<\/a> on July 9, 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Feb. 26, 1905<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Columbus Hospital at 2520 N. (Chuck Berman\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-woman-founder-of-46-hosp\/176272070\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Columbus Hospital<\/a>, at Deming Place and Lakeview Avenue in Lincoln Park, was dedicated and opened. It was the 46th institution founded by Cabrini.<\/p>\n<p>The building was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-columbus-hospital-deal-w\/176344010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold<\/a> in 2001, then <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-columbus-hospital-to-mak\/176343259\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demolished<\/a> in late 2006, to make way for a triple-tower high-rise condominium project \u2014 the first of its kind in the area since the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Lakeview Avenue has an honorary marker designating it as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmdb.org\/m.asp?m=187989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mother Cabrini Drive<\/a> and also <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/nfl-buffalo-bills-football-coach-marv-levy\/1620961\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marv Levy Way<\/a>, for the Chicago-born former coach of the Buffalo Bills.<\/p>\n<p>Feb. 4, 1910<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Cardinal John Cody greets members of the Old Town Boys Club who played at the dedication ceremony for the Cabrini Community Health Center on July 15, 1970, next to St. Cabrini Hospital. (David Nystrom\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>Cabrini purchased for <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-land-sold-to-mother-cabr\/176220965\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$28,200<\/a>\u00a0property at the northeast corner of Lytle Street and Gilpin Place on the Near West Side to build <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-plan-hospital-for-poor\/176220878\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Columbus Extension Hospital<\/a>, which later was renamed St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Hospital (811 S. (AP)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-mother-cabrini-dead-fou\/176345007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cabrini died<\/a> while sitting in a <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-many-chicagoans-visit-ro\/176346905\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wicker rocking chair<\/a> inside her room at Columbus Hospital. Her body lay in state until Dec. 26, when it was <a href=\"https:\/\/cabrinishrinenyc.org\/mother-has-flown-to-heaven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transported to New York for burial<\/a> by the Pullman Co.<\/p>\n<p>Nuns from Cabrini\u2019s order closed up the spartan room, and dismantled it piece by piece when Columbus Hospital was rebuilt in the 1940s. (AP)<\/p>\n<p>Cabrini was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-mother-cabrini-beatified\/176347981\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beatified<\/a> as part of a Mass presided over by Pope Pius XI and celebrated by Chicago\u2019s first cardinal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/03\/21\/vintage-chicago-tribune-mundeleins-highlights-a-century-after-his-elevation-to-cardinal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Mundelein<\/a>, who also officiated at Cabrini\u2019s funeral. The radio broadcast of the ceremony marked the first one delivered by an American prelate from St. Peter\u2019s Basilica in Vatican City. The occasion marked special veneration for Cabrini on her path to sainthood.<\/p>\n<p>Vatican firefighters were called in after wooden chandeliers holding candles near a bronze altar canopy caught fire during the event.
